which is best for taking sound from a PVR to a AV reciever?

Usually not much in it, but an electrical connection should be better as there are fewer conversions involved, and thus less opportunity for errors to be introduced.

Optical goes: optical (read from the disc), converted to electrical, converted to optical for transmission, converted back to electrical at receiving end, converted to analogue.

Electrical goes: optical, converted to electrical, converted to analogue.

As long as it is a 75 ohms cables and has no fault which ever type should sound the same
