Choosing new speakers. Fyne vs PMC vs KEF

Hello, I been using a pair of Whaferdale Diamond 12.3 for a while with great results. Although the bass is a bit boomy with some vinyl records.

I am going to change speakers, and I was thinking about Fyne 501E or 501S, Ket Q7 Meta, or PMC Prodigy 5.

I don’t have a fixed listening position and I’m looking for speakers that offer good dispersion, so the sound remains clear and balanced no matter where I’m sitting or standing in the room. Which of these models would be a good choice, with a good sound as well, besides dispersion characteristics.

I tried the EVO 5.3, and my impression was the vertical dispersion was not very good

Thanks for your help.

Hi, can you pls. share which components, mainly amp you plan to use with new speakers? Same, how big is the room? Otherwise, all those three speakers are very good but different. Specific is Prodigy 5, which I will not buy into room larger than 30m². Even, It has I think best sound quality from three speakers selected by you. Both Fyne Audio and Kef Q7 will fill even larger space. Fyne Audio even sensitive has large impedance dips into quite low values, mainly in bass. It is not very good for tubes. They love power. Kef surprisingly is more friendly here in this aspect. BR.

Thanks, I will using an Arcam A15+ amp and a Technics 1500 SL . The room is like 22 m2

Ok, Arcam A15+ is very good and universal amp. If it is my system, I will try PMC Prodigy 5 for your room. And you got a very good turntable. For future I recommend to have a look for better phono stage. Phono in Arcam is just "so so" in this amp. Good external phono with proper cartridge will elevate the whole your system. BR.

I’m listening to my snug system at the moment…
EXA100 EXN100 PMC Prodigy 5……
There is an argument that anything better than this is going to cost many times the price…
The Prodigy 5 are an exceptional speaker in the right room.
My listening area in the snug is about a 2m equilateral in a room of 17sq m

Vertical dispersion is an issue with many speakers, and strictly speaking you will invariably get a change of tonality when, for example, standing up. However, how you will react to such a change, and what effect your furnishings will have on this is literally impossible to predict.

With the best will in the world, nobody here can know that! The best solution by far is to enlist the support of a cooperative dealer and try to some options at home.

Without more research I would tend to favour the KEF for vertical dispersion with its coaxial driver. However Fyne designs use similar, and on that basis the conventional PMC likely fares least well. But that’s thinking of tech measurements rather than your ears!

I really like my diamond 12.1i

you must move the speakers further away from a wall, corner

Plug bass port helps alot

Something like this 2026-03-04 22_22_43-Greenshot.jpg

Room correction with a good mike, wiim streamers, amps has it and it does alot for the bass, also you can adjust the bass after room correction with eq or peq

Get smaller diamond speakers

I’m not really sure what you’re saying @gasolin but my EXA100 has full grip,of my PMCs and for the quality of presentation is an incredibly good value solution.
I’d guess the A15 would present similarly to the EXA100
You are not the only that doesn't have a clue what he is on about.....
However, you are correct, I don't see the A15 having any problems driving any of the speakers mentioned.

move the speakers or smaller diamonds if bass is a problem

wiim amps has eg and peq + room correction

And as some amps don't have including arcam

The option to adjust the eq from each input = you can adjust the bass to your turntable so it match how you like it to sound

Another option is to try a better cartridge

The big floorstand speakers from fyne, looke like the 500 do to the bass port close to the feet (video) can fill the big room they where in , mabye 100 square meters (as big as a a small house) with music but if the bass is good enough im not shure

I suggest looking at Dali speakers, specifically the new Sonik 5 or 7 models. Dali partners well with Arcam, and their tweeters offer wide dispersion without being too fussy about placement.

Ultimately however, you need to organise a home demo before you make a final commitment, and this is where buying from a proper dealer instead of a high volume box shifter will pay for itself.

Hi Matthew, I agree with you that Dali Sonic 5 or 7 will be outstanding speaker for some 22m². I have heard Sonic 7 with new Lyngdorf amp 22xx (new as well) on Bristol HiFi this year. They are realy good. But... PMC Prodigy 5 is masterpiece, I am sure they are in different league. But this is typical for PMC. They are easily overlooked and underestimated. If I am in this price range, I will look also on Dynaudio Special 40. They are bookshelf ones, but amazing. You just need proper amp and source. BR.
