Cheaper BlueRay player with 24fps and Analogue outputs...

Hi all

The recent review of the Panasonic DMP-BD50 got me thinking (again) about making the move to BlueRay.

My problem is the prohibitively high cost, and the Pana is a fine example 🙂

With that in mind, I've been looking at some recent players. Now I'm not really interested in anything over profile 1.0 (I rarely watch DVD special features!) but what I do want is 1080p with 24fps, as many if not all the new HD codecs and onboard decoding through analogue outputs - that way, I don't need to replace my Marantz!

I've stumbled across the Samsung BD-P1400 which can be acquired for under £200

The thing is that while I could get a PS3 or BD30, I wouldn't get any HD sound until I upgraded my amp, which is another £400!!

Are there any other reasonable players with analogue outputs?

Oh, and finally, if a player has 6 channel analogue will it always output uncompressed audio through these outputs?

Okay so I saw the Hidef sound thread, I'll get better sound quality with one good HDMI lead and I can always flog the old kit.

What about the Onkyo TX-SR506. It's £250 which is good.
The review says that it will switch 3 hdmi into 1 output which is also good.

So it doesn't support HD decoding but wait a minute, does that mean that if the BlueRay player has all the necessary HD decoding (like the Panasonic BD30) then you'll get all the HD sound you need?

Only through the analog outputs. I believe the 576 is the cheapest Onkyo that will accept Linear PCM (decoded HD audio) over a HDMI connection. It's also worth checking out the new Sony STR-DG820 which will both decode the HD formats and accept LPCM. You should be able to order it for £250 but a lot of people have been frustrated by the lack of stock.

Also, the BD30 does not have all the necessary decoding, that's the BD50.
