I am confused. Increasingly I read that Sky HD has this flaw where when watching over HDMI only Stereo is delivered and that the HDMI overrides any additional connections so that it wont work that way either. So what is the truth, is 5.1 capabilty as advertised a nonsense or can it do it as I cannot see how?

the daft thing is I am not overly bothered about 5.1 and would like recommendations for a good Stereo/Sub system to upgrade the average sound on my new Samsung but this is bothering me and I dont want to rule it out as I may be forced to buy 5.1 (to get the right size/look/quality/integration) but would be forever frustrated that the whole thing was a lemon.

Yes, Sky only delivers stereo over HDMI; for 5.1-channel surround you also need a digital audio connection, either optical or electrical, depending on the model of Sky+HD box you have.

Most AV receivers allow you to connect sound from digital audio and HDMI video at the same time.
