I would assume this is not done by CA. How much does it cost and does it have warranty implications?

Hot rodding players etc is nothing new (I used a trichord modified pioneer a long time ago) but it would perhaps be worth waiting until there's some broader feedback and let others be the guinea pig ...

It would also be good to hear from CA on their thoughts. They know their 0's and 1's.

It seems to me (especially considering the whole 'Level' system) they've simply opened the DacMagic and replaced parts with those higher up the price range. Not a thought given to musicality or synergy.

I'm not saying it won't sound better as I've never heard it. But the definition of 'better' varies from person to person when it comes to music reproduction. For example, one persons "wonderful detail" can be anothers "cold and clinical".

Email them to see if you can request a demo unit (by paying a deposit of course). Even if it means paying for return shipping, at least you can be certain of your purchase.

it £155 and they give you 12 months warrinty from when thay do it.

I had the level 2 modification done and allthough it seems that it was slightly better performing, i haven't compared it side by side with a standard DacMagic.

But it made me get rid of my Xindak DAC-8 wich sounded beautiful audiophile like but a bit less body muscular and musical in the lower registers compared to my DacMagic.

I still have the DacMagic and allthough the jump in quality wasn't as big after the upgrade as i expected when i received the unit without burn-in it still is there. There might be even better results with an upgraded psu. The DacMagic defenitly wants to compete with my MHZS CD88G and this is certainly not bad at all!!

how would you say the sound changed when you got it back.in what way would you say it was better.also who did the upgrade for you?.

At Audiocom, i found them through Ebay for my upgrade.

When my DacMagic was original i couldn't find any differences when compared to the DAC in my Yamaha receiver, there were subtle differences after the mod in terms of air, a bit more open ans slightly more detail and body but it wasn't a wow i'm blown away diference either. I admit it wasn't fully burned in when did a comparison, maybe it will sound a bit better now. But i have to say the mod it isn't cheap, but on the other hand, a more expensive DAC isn't always better either.

looking at the upgrade you got and the one i posted there is some very big differances in the two.

Cool.

I have a better idea. 155GGBP is almost the price of DacMagic, so I get an upgrade for the price I (almost) already paid once. For more then 400GBP I could buy proper DAC, much better than DacMagic...

You might if you choose the right one for your system, listen carefully! The 850 euro Xindak DAC-8 i compared it to sounded beautiful but had to go becausse it didn't had any weight to the music compared to the upgraded DacMagic. But i heard reports that the xindak DAC-9 is better and has a lovely design to. It seems a lot of pricier higher end gear sounds beautiful but a little thin for my experience, so watch out before splashing money.
