Bored of HiFI, or am I?

My system is a Cyrus Straightline, Quad 12L and Marantz CD63-KIS, nordost cables and dnm interconnect. I listen to a bit everything. After a number of iterations, I settled on this setup about 10 years ago and i've been very happy with it. I've been tempted to upgrade something occasionally, but frankly, my enthusiasm for HiFi has been waning. I ask myself: how much better can it be, and is it worth the trouble and expense?

Still, now that i've got £400-500 in my pocket, i've been wondering how much difference that could make with the latest generation of kit. So my question is : what kind of upgrade would rekindle my enthusiasm for this expensive hobby? I'm also tempted to get a budget turntable and start record hunting, which looks like fun.

I took off about a year from the hobby by not buying anything new. A year is a very long time for me. What held my attention and still does today are records. I starting getting into record playing and shopping for them. Very fun hobby in itself. So my obvious advice is to take your own suggestion and buy that turntable.

If you want to rejouvenate a sound you've basically just got bored of, change your speakers.

£500 will get you a good turntable, but if you haven't already got a collection of records, give some serious consideration as to whether it really is an avenue you want to go down. If you have a large collection of CDs, £500 will buy you into a computerised/streaming solution, which might be enough to rekindle your interest by allowing you to enjoy your existing music in a new way without having to start a fresh music collection.

Go out and buy some new music,go to concerts, discover some new music

if you ever one day listen to a system that sounds alot better then what you have and it's not one of those insanly expensive systems, consider upgrading.

Considered upgrading so you can stream for your computer from youtube, spotify ........?

Mabye new speakers could also be what you need

Yes, £500 will buy a Sonos Connect and a year of Spotify Premium.

Probably the biggest difference you'll ever hear for £400 is a set of good headphones...

Another good call. The Hifimans (Hifimen?) are superb; haven't heard the Sennheisers. But there's a risk: good cans might make you fall even more out of love with your speakers.

I could never get board of my hi-fi separates system as it plays the form of entertainment I love the most, music. I love hunting for records plus CDs and tapes in my local independent record shops and charity stores. It's very fun and it is fun to buy blind a lot too. Some of my all time favorite artists and bands have been found that way. In charity shops you can pick up some great records for not a lot of money. I once picked up a copy of Peter Skellern Hard times on vinyl in near mint condition for a quid from a charity store. I had never heard of him then but since buying the record it has become one of my all time favorite albums. I guess what I am trying to say is if it was not for the music I too would get bord of hi-fi my separates system. The music is what keeps me loving hi-fi separates parts and keeps me upgrading. So yes buy a turntable and go out recored shopping often and hopefully that will rekindle your intreast in hi-fi.

The impression I get is that you are bored of the idea of hi-fi in general rather than with your own system. If I am right, and you are struggling to find enthusiasm for hi-fi shopping because you are enjoying your music so much on the kit you have, leave it alone and carry on as you are or, as others have suggested, add functionality that might give you even greater access to your music.

I usually find my enthusiasm for all things hifi diminishes somewhat during the summer. There is just so much else to do. It then gets stronger again as the nights draw in sooner.

To the OP, as you said, this hobby can get expensive but a new piece of hifi every now and then is nice.

I also got that impression and agree with Matthew's advice.

If you still enjoy listening to music but just aren't that intrested in buying HiFi equipment, then that's probably a good thing. It means you can spend your money on your other hobbies. No need to worry about it.

I think most persons get bored with their hobbies at some point. I've been bored with HiFi for quite some time now. I find it really hard to pull the triger whenever I get the opportunity to rebuild my system. I tend to find other hobbies to spend my cash on instead.

Thanks all - plenty to mull there. I guess i'm tempted more by the turntable option now, since i'd rather spend my time hunting for records than demoing kit. I've already got spotify premium and a mac, so perhaps a usb dac might be worth a flutter too.
