A good DVD transfered correctly can look fantastic as a Good BD can look even better but this is very dependant upon a few factors, namely the size and quality of your display, DVD player and BD player.
IMHO the differance between BD and upscaled DVD on say a 32"" is not as noticeible as say on a 50"" 1080p pannel. And the differance again between a lower/mid priced DVD player and BD is quite obvious on a larger screen. But when you have and use a High-end DVD (I have a Denon DVD3930) on certain discs the differance is not as obvious as you would expect. Admitidly at the moment my BD playback is down to the PS3, but yes the image is sharper and colours more vivid but not enough to make me stop buying movies on DVD so I for one can see where the OP was comming from.
Maybe I would notice more improvements on a High-end BD player?
