Big TVs on little stands

I finally purchased my lovely Panasonic TH42PX80, which is presently sitting on the dedicated Toshiba 'Picture Frame' stand from my old 32 inch Toshiba CRT (the combination therefore looking rather odd).

I would like to get a proper new stand for the TV (needs at least two large shelves for DVD, V+ box, PS2 and Wii, and hopefully one day a home cinema amp), but don't want something too large and obtrusive, not least since the TV sits in a corner.

The stands advertised for 32 inch plasmas/LCDs seem to fit the bill size wise: the pedestal of my TV would fit on the top of a 32 inch stand (even if the sides of the TV itself do 'hang over' the edges), and such a stand would presumably support the TV's weight.

However, is there any advantage (other than more space for stuff) on those stands advertised for 42 inch and above TVs? The stands don't actually need to match the width of the TV, do they?

For optimum stability we'd suggest that the stand is at least as wide as the TV.

Also, narrower stands tend to be designed for smaller, and thus lighter, TVs - check that the top shelf of the stand is strong enough to hold the TV you have.

I'm betting that if it was holding a 32" CRT, it'll be more than man enough for a flatscreen (weight wise), even a larger screen.
