Bi Amp an AV AMP

Hi all,

I am just getting the room ready for the new Onkyo 808 and Monitor Audio RX Silver AV speaker system. I am not interested in Bi -wiring, but am considering Bi-amping. However, this will involve me in a little hassle with opening up floors etc as the original cables for the normal 5.1 setup are already run.

My question therefore is whether it is worth the hassle of Bi-amping an AV amp using the 'spare' 2 surround channels from the amp (zone 2) or whether there is little discernable difference. I am happy to go with the hassle if it's worth it. The room is to be used 90% for movies.

Definately! Your sepakers and ears will benefit greatly from having 2 seperate amplifiers driving the treble and mid/low frequencies. I've noticed little benefit in bi-wiring, but bi-amping gives you much better seperation, not to mention your AV amp will find it a lot easier to drive your speakers. I'm confident you'll notice a significant improvement.

Thanks, I had been told that Bi Amping is only really effective when used with seperate amp's and was virtually worthless if bi-amping with and AV reciever as you were in effect only using the spare surround channels and therefore this was not as intended bu the speaker manufacturers?

In effect it is a seperate amp within your AV receiver, no it won't be as good as using a dedicated seperate power amp, but still a significant improvement. I immediately noticed more seperation between the instruments.

Well I did experiment with bi-amping my monitor audio RX set-up from a Denon 3310. I did notice the difference through the front speakers, with sounds more seperated and crisp compared to non-bi-amp. This of course is only my opinion. I recommend tyring it out before digging the floor up and seeing if you can hear a difference.
