Hello guys,

I've had this sub for a few weeks now and love it. However on 3 occasions the sub has stopped working during a film (green light but no noise), when the bass is deep and heavy, like the explosions at the beginning of Serenity. If i turn it off, unplug, then plug in again and switch on its ok again. I've set everything up using the Pioneer MCACC auto calibration program. once set up i watch blu-ray's at about -12db and sky hd at -10db, it is loud but not over the top loud. Has anyone else had this, pleeeeeease help, i wouldn't want to damage the sub.

Crossover 140Hz (Maximum)

EQ: i

Volume 50%

Mode: Auto

Phase: +

When you say it stopped working, do you mean like you here a click and it switches off? because they is no bass in that part of the movie? Or are you saying there is bass in that part of the movie but nothing is happening with the sub?

Thanks

Hello gel,

I notice during the film that the sound is a little light during what should be a deep base part of the film. So I go in to the menu of the amp and go to channel level adjustment menu and select SW to see if the sub outputs any noise, and it doesn't. So I then switch off and unplug the sub, then plug in and switch on again, go in to the channel level menu again and the sub works again. I've read somewhere that I should turn the crossover frequency on the sub to higher than the setting on the amp, which is 80 hz. However in the sub instructions, which aren't that detailed, it says the crossover dial is redundant when using lfe in.

Any ideas mate?

The Yamaha manual specifies that crossover on the sub should be set to maximum

Usually subs do have an LFE mode where they just play whatever the amp sends them, (so you have to set the crossover in the amp correctly).

Is the sub on automatic, where it goes into standby if it isn't being sent anything, or anything of high enough volume? I stopped using this on my sub, as it took a short while to wake up, or didn't wake up if I had the volume low. I suppose turning on and off in this case would wake it up again, so socule be your issue.

Try setting all the speakers to small in AVR and see if you are getting the bass as expected. Also, when you think that sub is not working any more, pause the movie and send a test tone to the Sub from the AVR menu to make sure that there is no challenge with the sub. If these two yield negative results, then in my own opinion it needs to get serviced.

Hello everybody, thank you for your advice,

Ok, i have re-assed the situation. I have already ascertained that although the sub is receiving a signal it is not outputting any sound, when tested using the test signal in the amps menu system. However i have tested again at -12 db on the amp while watching the deep bass parts at the beginning of serenity. I managed to get close enough in my wheelchair to hear a pop noise from the sub during one of the explosions and then the sub stopped working. After unplugging the sub and plugging back in it works again. This must obviously be a sort of protective cutout device making the popping noise, which then resets once the sub has been removed from the mains supply. So although -12 db on the amp is quite loud, it is not a ridiculous volume. All the speakers levels were set up in the pioneer amps MCACC auto setup program, does anyone have an experience of this in regards to setting the sub at too high levels or incorrectly.

Thanks guys

The sub may well have a problem.

My old amp started cutting out after a while and initially would work OK for a while again if turned off / on.

Have you tried just leaving it on for a while with no signal, or with something that's not bass heavy and then seeing if it's stopped responding?

I am not sure here Neil, i mean i have had two of these now and my dad has one too but these have all been setup professionally.

You say when you do a test tone there is noise coming from it? Because there should be a hmm noise from it (from what i can remember when it was setup)

Also what volume is the sub on? If you roll the sub back to have a look at the controls the first one controls the volume, you have to turn that clockwise (i think) to turn the volume up.

- 12 db is extremely loud volume from your amp, i rarely go past - 23db on movies now and like -27db on music blu rays. So the sub should be making lots of noise.

Thanks

Firstly, turn the sub's power to 'on', not 'auto'.

Check the volume on the sub is at around 2 O'Clock

Run the crossover all the way up, as the receiver does the filtering anyway.

Check the level of the sub once you've done the automated set-up. My Onkyo's Audyssey auto set-up sets mine at -10db and states in the manual that due to the low level of sub-bass it probably needs setting manually. Try altering this to 0db to start.

Check the crossover frequency that the receiver is rolling the sub off. Somewhere around 80 - 120hz will be best. I have mine set to 90hz.

Ensure the E.Q is set to i., not ii, or iii.

Give this a try with something bassy. Transformers will do nicely.

Thanks guys for all your help I really appreciate it,

OK Chris, I have done all the settings you suggest and still the same pop then off. I know what you mean transformers has excellent deep base but I don't have it at the moment I watched it on sky. I am using serenity BD particularly the opening scene where the base is really deep and loud when you see the explosions on the earth. During this scene is when the sub pops once and then no base even though the sub is still lit green, as I used to be an electrician it sounds like a safety trip switch. So I think either the base is too loud for my sub, which I am not sure if it is i don't think so, or the trip switch is faulty in some way. I have called my dealer who has kindly offered to pop in to see me at my house tomorrow (because of my disability its harder for me to get to the store, which I thought is excellent service) and bring their demo pv1 and see whats up.
