Hi

Anyone who owns the above sub have you ever notice a ticking noise coming from the back of the sub when it is in standby mode?

When the sub is switched to on the ticking goes to a constant buzz.

To me sounds like the transformer but the ticking seems a bit odd.

If it's a random ticking noise when on standby, I get the same thing from my tv for some reason, but have done since day one....

Has your sub just started this, or always done it?

It has. Only just thought now about putting something on here to see if others had the same noise.

Michael,

I also have the same sub but I don't get any ticking at all. Its just a fabulous sub with B&W 685 Theatre.

Is there no ticking even if you put your ear close behind the sub?

I would contact the shop you got it from then.....and see what they say.

How is the B&W 685 package, by the way.....it's currently on my demo list. Either of you demo the B&W 684's for a comparsion?

Had mine for about 6months now and never heard any ticking noises coming from it. Just sounds great with my M1 speakers

To be honest I have had the kit for nearly 2 years now, so I think an email to B&W would be in order.

With the kit itself I love it to bits. Was my biggest purchase of Hi-Fi/AV equipment to date and I haven't regret it once.

If you have a big room then the 684 may be a better choice, but my 685's sound like they would fill a room twice, if not three times the size of my living room.

Would other kit have you thought of auditioning?

Roughly about 4m x 6m. I have the seating position and tv within the 4m.

The only downside it the sofa and the rears are against the back wall. I have the rears at about 120 degrees but they point just in front of the seating position.

Find this is best as the where to over powering when pointed directly at the listening position.

I'd have loved the RX6 package.

Think for my my upgrade path will be along the hi-fi route to link in to my current av set up. Add a 2 channel amp and cd player.

Cheers Chris

I don't hear any problem with the subs quality.

Though I do have to have the volume of the sub turned way down. Otherwise it'd bring the whole flat down.

What setting do have your sub volume at Chris. Mine is roughly 3 o'clock, taking 12 as being off pointing to the floor.

My room is 14' x 12' so the B&W 684 will be a little big....saying that they are the same size as my QA 1030i's and they fit.sound fine in here....

I too have the couch on a back wall but have my speakers angled down from the side walls to the couch....seems ok, but might buy the B&W M1's instead of the 686's.....

I have contemplated getting some higher speaker stands for the rears. Current on a 600mm stand. Looking at 700/800mm ones.

Should improve the effects.

Michael,

My sub is set higher than your setting. Have you tried the car chase in Quantum Of Solace, when Bonds Aston is chased by Alfa Romeos who are shooting at 007 it really shows how good the B&W 685 Theatre is!! I previously had Kef floorstanders which I gave to my son for his 21st. I demoed Mordaunt Short Mezzos, B&W and KEF small speaker systems but the B&W 685 Theatre was clearly superior within my budget. Even my wife and son could here the difference and guess who wanted small speakers?

Best Wishes

Thanks for the reply Dalesman.

Didn't know if was a characteristic of subs in standby. Strange that some seem to have it and others don't.

I'll give the scene a try. Find the sub really shakes the flat when it is up any higher.

Was quite surprised with it being at such a low setting. Maybe it is down to the size of my room, or my setting in the amp, but again I think that is set around -10dB.

michael.......one more question:

Do the B&W 685's work well close to walls? I notice the port is at the front, and there are none at the rear (unlike the B&W 684's), so I'm assuming they are?????

Thanks.......
