Morning Pete.

The 685' are front ported as you say. I find them very good where mine are placed, which is roughly about a foot or so from the wall.

I do find they produce great bass even without the sub turned on. They also come with foam baffles, so if you want to tone the bass down you can stick them in the port.

Be nice to hear a review when you audition some kit how the B&W's match up against the RX6 kit.

My 685s are 3 foot from the walls and find thats where they sound best. I use an Onkyo 905 to drive the speakers and have just bought a Sony 760 blueray player. The 685s sound great with my Arcam HiFi system so I am really pleased with the speakers. I did not demo the B&W 684s as I blew the money on a better sub. I have my 685s on Atama Nexus 6 stands and they are 60cm tall but really improve the sound compared to my other stands.
