Least number of strands is 1 (no, seriously, some use single-core cables!) and be prepared to either be ignored or to be responsible for starting yet another 'debate' about cables...

In my humble opinion speaker cable is the most cost effective upgrade to any system but of course many will disagree, i noticed an instant improvement to the sound of my system when i bought the QED silver anniversary XT cable for example and although it was a little pricey to run it to all my speakers i'm very happy i went to the trouble and expense.

Let the cable debate start yet again and as Harry Hill would say....FIGHT!

I would say get the cheapest AWG 14 OFC for any system. The (recently) oft quoted Van Damme pro cable at 2.5mm thickness will be 99% as good as anything else...imo. It isn't "cheap" (£3 a metre), but having used that and stuff costing 4.5 times as much I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

And although I am not quite in the "all cables sound the same" camp, I would say it is the LEAST cost effective upgrade to any system as the differences are subtle at best (so long as you are not upgrading from bell-wire).
