BBC Sounds - download ?

I use BBC Sounds PodCast fine.
However there are also often good serials (or even one-off) radio shows that I would like to download.
No easy download on BBC Sounds web site ... only 'stream now'

Are there any players or apps that will allow me to download the 'streamed content' or some way.

My preferred choice of listening is download to my phone to play in the car.

Ah. But the podcast section doesn’t. How curious.

I used to use Replay years ago to record audio in real time. Not sure what today’s options are.

I’d just stream to the phone and thence to the car system, either via CarPlay or Bluetooth.

Archers is time-limited though -- you can't get more than around 1 month back. For PodCast I use 'Radio Downloader' and it saves podcast automatically to my HD and I then transfer to my phone for playing in the car.

THis was what I was trying to do with 'book serials' which don't have RSS code.

Thanks for that never realised teh app had only been using a browser to find what I wanted.
I just installed, it does allow download.
Where does it store the files .... can you get at them or do you have tp use App to play them back ?

On the iOS app, under My Sounds, bottom strip. Choose your download, press play. Then, in the car, use AA/CP or Bluetooth to play your download via the car system.

I tend to just stream via CP. A cable connection keeps my phone charged whilst it plays, and I can control everything by steering wheel button or screen and the phone can be left tucked away.

As long a they are downloaded and will play off-line then great.
I typically have phone connected to car by Bluetooth and play audio using VLC player.

I just downloaded a 10 part set I was interested in ... I'll try listening next week

Sorry, Apple’s CarPlay. Internet connected cars tend to be fairly limited in what they can do.

CarPlay, and the Google equivalent Android Auto, use the phone connection and its auto related apps and hand it over to the car screen and controls.

Most modern cars without AA/CP will have Bluetooth, but that entails control via the phone, a bit iffy whilst driving.

Call me old fashioned, but when I drive I concentrate on driving.
There's no phone switched on (or in sight) and no music.
If I ever kill anyone, it won't be because I'm distracted.

If it’s got AA, the car will have some kind of screen I guess. Try AA - for a cable (USB A to whatever your phone uses) you can access additional nav aids like Waze plus other auto optimised apps safely, including your podcasts. It keeps you away from touching your phone and the cable connection keeps it charged 👍

I take that point, but would distinguish between serious listening to music - to the exclusion of all else - and having local news/traffic updates on, and spoken word/nav aids on for longer runs. I can send destinations to the car sat on the sofa, and control via steering wheel switches. Some apps, even via voice.

I’m 75 this yr. Haven't had an accident in decades. A long run I class as the North Italian Lakes, or, in France, SW to the Dordogne, or SE to the Med. I wouldn’t entertain that without traffic updates and live re-routing.

AA/CP are designed for auto and hand over control to the car. If you don’t want to use driver aids - which would include dashboard information - great. We’re all different.

"get_iplayer" will download a single programme on BBC sounds or all the series available some series now listing over 1000 programmes. The BBC may find further ways to block it but it is the only way to get the full audio at the highest quality and keep as long as you need to.

Many programmes are still limited to 30 days and you find you can only pick up a few but not the whole series. Some series are up for years and disappear for years to come.

I think I do use all the features, but not in an identical fashion. Let me try to explain:-

For live radio, I stream using the Wiim or Linn app, which has options like TuneIn or vTuner or Airable as the ‘consolidator’. I think that’s the correct term for the service that indexes the stations.

For replay after the event, or podcasts, I use the Sounds app itself and use AirPlay to cast it to the streamer. Here’s a screenshot from my iPad a few minutes ago. I’m listening to my favourite Radio 3 show Record Review, first broadcast a couple of Saturdays ago. The little blue lozenge at the top shows I’m casting it to the Wiim Pro Plus.
