hello friends,

i just got q acoustics 2020i and paired with marantz pm 6004 amp..

the details levels and mid range are very high quality and i am happy with it... but it seemed more open sound ,it was little difficult to listen for long time when some harsh musics are played..

and also in my opinion, this amp seems high power for this q acoustics..

so i planned to replace a low power amp for Q`s..

does my idea of changing the marantz amp. is correct? or changing the speaker (probably wharfedale 121s)is better idea?

If the amp and speakers are brand new, give them a little time to 'run-in'. It is very common for tweeters to sound a little harsh when new.

My PM6004 took a little while to settle too, it sounded quite brash to begin with. The 6004 and 2020i should make a very good match, in my opinion.

And don't worry about power- it's better to have 'too much' than not enough. The Marantz will have no problem with the speakers, and vice-versa. Give yourself a little more time with the system before you make any decisions.

Also, I did notice significant benefits with changing speaker cables. What do you use? Something like Audioquest FLX 14.4 or Chord Carnival may bring benefits if you are using cheap cables.

Like Dougal said...........give it some time. The amp is great and so are the speakers.

If you're still not satisfied after some time you can try to change the amp............I would try the Denon PMA-720AE or Pioneer A-30. I use the Pioneer A-30 amp with the 2020i speakers and no harsh sounds at all..........just a nice (a bit warm but I like that) musical sound ;)

Q Acoustics are making very good speakers for the money. Give them some time for running-in, especially the tweeter. Give them 100 to 150 hours of playing time, they will change and sounding sweeter. I had the Q1010 5.1. set a time ago in my home cinema also with Marantz. They sounded a little sharp at the beginning, but after a few weeks it was gone......so be patient. ;)

p.s. also use a good OPC speakerwire (Canare: good and not expensive), don't use silver plated cable, these cables can bring more brightness/sharpness in the heights.

I know there are different views on this but IMO changing speaker cables won't change a thing. Go with changing the electronics or the speakers if you want to change the sound of your system ;)

Yep, there are lot of discussions between cables.....let's don't do it over here ;)

But for the topic starter: just what i said before.....give your speakers some running-in time first.

Hi Dougal1331

As i posted in another thread earlier today I use standard 500 strand OFC speaker cables with Concept 20 speakers which are sometimes being powered with amplification such as Naim NAP 250, Plinius Hiato and a Krell FPB600.

All the best

The power levels are fine however i would say that you're on the right track with changing the amp. I've ultimately found the amp to be sound somewhat soft and brittle. Pair the speakers with amplification that has better weight, punch and drive (particularly in the low frequecies) to help offset the slightly light bass of the speakers.

Look at a NAD C370, Rotel RA-1062 or for new and if your budget allows a Rega Brio-R.

No I don't agree, the 6004 is not very powerful, if anything you want more power and more control, esp. if you play at moderate levels.

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the hi-fi game, and recently bought myself a pair of Q Acoustics 2020i speakers to use with a Technics sa-ex100 amplifier unit. When I connected the speakers the sound produced was crackly, and I'm pretty sure it's because the amplifier's wattage is too high, although I'm not entirely... The amp is 80W per channel, and the recommended wattage for the speakers is 25-75w, I'm guessing the amp is too powerful for the speakers? Or is it possible to use an amp on a higher wattage?

Amp specs are: http://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/technics/sa-ex100.shtml

If someone could clarify for me I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks

Ollie

Why do you think the amplifier is too powerful?

What source are you using? Hardware and software.

. Crackly sound has nothing to do with too powerful an amp, Ollie. If you had it turned way up in a huge room the speakers might sound distorted. Crackly sounds like worn out or dirty volume control, or dodgy connections. 70 or 80 watts is neither here or there, by the way.

Welcome to the madness!
