Hi, its been nearly 35 yrs but I have decided to come back to vinyl, I have around £1k to spend on at the moment 2 things, firstly an RP3 then the remainder on on amp. Ideally it should have a phono stage and I would like bluetooth connection to play through my Samsung 6500 curved tv soundbar, the speaker side of things is very much an interim thing until I get together a similar amount for a proper set of speakers. Would appreciate some wise council as its been some time since I threw my Fidelity record player out of a one story window and went to Martins In Norwich in the 70's and bought my Denon amp, Dual deck and Kef Concord speakers, thanx in advance.

FWIW. My advice is to stretch your budget by £100 (or bargain hard), concentrate only on the TT....and get a Rega Brio R....it is the best amp with a decent phono stage at your budget (IMO).

Buy a leema pulse amp (used eBay) this has a cracking phono stage.

forget the Bluetooth,

get a rega of your choice, add a nagaoka cart, and away you go.

Q acoustics speakers are getting good reviews, try a pair that fits your budget, there are loads to pick from.

Thanks for the above, things have moved on a little, I have 2k to play with now, still want the RP3 but the amp and speakers are open to debate, bluetooth idea is a none starter now.

There are so many tales of mismatched equipment I would appreciate some ideas as to the 2 remaining components, then a visit to the local or not so local shop to have a listen.

Cannot really help unless we know what exactly a trip to a 'not so local' shop can allow you to audition.

Regards the RP3, buy it with a decent cartridge fitted or all a else will be a worthless exercise.

And just to contradict some other posters just because Rega make turntables as well as amps it doesn't always mean that their inbuilt phono stages are the nuts. ;-)

I think you may as well get the newer Planar 3. Rega's naming convention isn't a great help, I have to say. As already suggested, something better than the packaged cartridge is worthwhile.

If the £2k budget doesn't include speakers, then I guess the better Elex-R amp is a leading contender. Otherwise, stick with the cheaper one, and try to hear speakers from Dali, Dynaudio, KEF and QA, as they've been amongst the most popular and well reviewed recently.

Sorry yea, Planar 3 is my deck of choice, so I have about £1400 or so for the amp and speakers, as for travelling to listen, I will go where it takes to ensure I get the 'right' set up and there is plenty of choice around the Liverpool Manchester area.

Steve P, you seem to be considering new equipment only.

The best innovation that's hit the world of hi-fi in the last 30 years is the Internet. Where we have hi-fi forums and ebay.

On the amp side I'd also suggest getting to hear an Exposure 1010 (with a decent external phono stage), and Arcam A19.

For speakers there is plenty of choice but in the £400-£600 price range I'd be looking at Dali, Dynaudio, and KEF.

If I was ever going to get back into turntables. I think my first stop would be an original Technics SL1210. The are places that specialise in their meticulous refurbishment.

Steve 1979 (on this forum) got his from a specialist, I think it's definitely worth looking into.

I also think active speakers, and a preamp that meets your requirements could interest you.

Even as an AVI user, I can still see a pair of Beolab 9s on the horizon.

That group test they're running is around you area I think (I believe lindsayt is going) it might be worth trying for an invite so you can hear the different options.

I bought mine from Iconic Audio who's been a Technics dealer since 1994. He's seems like a good seller with with lots of positive reviews and he had good communication when I asked him questions. I bought mine in near mint condition (apart from a scratched lid which was easily replaced with a new one) so it was a bit of a bargin compared to what else is available on eBay.

I've looked at his eBay shop a few times and he hardly sells anything any more compared to what he used to but if you're interested in buying a 'Techie' you could do a lot worse than sending him a message first before taking your chances with most of the other sellers on eBay.

That's the second time you have alluded to your desire to shoot me. I wonder whether What Hi-Fi? would like to supply your registration details to the police. You know, just in case you do something (even more) stupid.

That is a really nasty, sinister, bullying and illegal post.

Threatening to shoot someone is totally out of order.

House rule number 1 says:

1. Members must not post libellous, racist, aggressive or otherwise insulting or abusive remarks about any individual, company or organisation.

Spiny Norman hadn't even posted in this thread when you made that really nasty comment about a box of cartridges.

He had therefore made zero remarks of any kind, abusive or otherwise in this thread when you posted something that I think deserves censure of the strongest kind.

Not only was your post aggresive and illegal, it was also off-topic.

But plenty elsewhere on this forum, eh lindsayt ? :)

He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy :)

If you think he has made abusive posts elsewhere in this forum then you should restrict your response to them to the thread in which he made them.

And under no circumstances should you ever threaten physical violence against any other member of this forum, as that is morally and legally wrong.

SPAZTICUS, there's the Edmund Burke quote "The only thing necessary for the proliferation of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Threatening to shoot someone that had not made any posts so far in this thread is evil.

I don't want to sit back and let that happen without challenging it in the very strongest terms I can.

And he's such an egotistical person he can't come up with a simple 'Sorry, I was out of order' but reverts to facetious and distinctly unfunny remarks. Remember, this was the man who launched the shilling campaign for an anonymous manufacturer, thus ending his own credibility and seriously damaging the reputation of the company concerned.
