Have you made sure you have selected the 6.1 sound track from the menu on the bd? If you have and you still get 5.1 then it's your amp at fault here i would say so make sure that your amp recognises that you have a 7.1 set up from it's menu's. Have you had any problems with a 6.1 or 7.1 sound track before? If other discs work fine then it could be the LOTR BD is faulty but i would seriously doubt that as i've not seen any one with issues with this set.

The soundtrack is a 6.1 ES DTS-HD Master Audio with the emphasis on ES.

I think this means that the 6th channel can only be 'activated' if your amp is set to DTS ES mode otherwise you will only get 5.1.

For instance I had the same issue with my Onkyo AV amp until I fiddled with the different sound modes and stumbled upon the correct DTS-ES mode just by cycling throught them.

I normally select a 'Pure Audio' mode and thought it would automatically read the 6.1 ES signal but actually I have to manually select it.

So try running through your amp's movie sound modes and see if the display for DTS-ES comes up.

tried that but nope.

when you press the disply button it shows the input as HD MA 5.1

and there are no ES options on the input. (older Onk 805 so things may have changed).

the only way i can get my rears to work is to set my amp to output the sound as thx cinema but doing that is giving a standard sound like dts-es or dolby digital, to me thats like a step down from hd audio and the disk is giving false info as on the setup screen it states the audio as 6.1 dts-hd and if its only 5.1 dts-hd with the surround back only as an extention (ES) thats just wrong!!!

This is all very strange eh! What i can say is that my old Sony amp had this sort of problem and the only way round it that i found was to change the speaker set up from 7.1 to 6.1 in the menu on the amp, then i got the full 6.1 track from the BD but if i had it set to (as logically you would in a 7.1 set up) 7.1 then it only gave me a 5.1 track but i never did find out why this was the case.

I presumed it was an issue with my amp as it was only a budget offering even if it was an award winner but since i got my Denon amp i've never had the issue and it correctly recognises the 6.1 ES track on the BD and displays this on the amp, the only conclusion i can come to is that it's an issue with the processing on some amps...?? Try changing your speaker set up in your amp's menus from a 7.1 set up to 6.1 and then try the lotr bds to see if that solves it.

that sounds like some people are having luck but not all, and just another point to make if i am watching the dark knight for example the sound track is 5.1 dolby thd and in 7.1 it adds ex to make some use of those backs but why dosnt 5.1 dts hd sound tracks do that with the es system?

it will if you set it to do so.

my amp will or will not depending on the setting. I have it to play back as it is. dolby 5.1 as 5.1 and 7.1 as 7.1. it also does the same with the HDMA DTS but with LOTR I just get 5.1 as that is what the amp sees. And as yet not been able to get it to see a 6.1 HD MA track. must check the DVDs as well if I still have them.

Quite possibly, as i said in my last post, this was the case with my old Sony amp and may be the problem here. Have you tried changing the speaker set up in your amp menus to 6.1????

Hi, I found a copy of your amp's manual online and looked up the surround mode settings:

Standard surround sound
The following modes provide basic surround sound for
stereo and multichannel sources.4
• While listening to a source, press STANDARD
(STANDARD SURROUND).
If necessary, press repeatedly to select a listening mode.
• If the source is Dolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Surround
encoded, the proper decoding format will
automatically be selected and shows in the display.5
With two channel sources, you can select from:
• 2 Pro Logic IIx MOVIE – Up to 7.1 channel sound,
especially suited to movie sources
• 2 Pro Logic IIx MUSIC – Up to 7.1 channel sound,
especially suited to music sources6
• 2 Pro Logic IIx GAME– Up to 7.1 channel sound,
especially suited to video games
• 2 PRO LOGIC – 4.1 channel surround sound (sound
from the surround speakers is mono)
• Neo:6 CINEMA – 6.1 channel sound, especially
suited to movie sources
• Neo:6 MUSIC – 6.1 channel sound, especially suited
to music sources7
• Neural THX – Up to 7.1 channel sound, especially
suited to music sources8
With multichannel sources, if you have connected
surround back speaker( s ) and have selected SBch ON, you
can select (according to format):
• 2 Pro Logic IIx MOVIE – See above (only available
when you’re using two surround back speakers)
• 2 Pro Logic IIx MUSIC – See above
• Dolby Digital EX – Creates surround back channel
sound for 5.1 channel sources and provides pure
decoding for 6.1 channel sources (like Dolby Digital
Surround EX)
• DTS-ES – Allows you to hear 6.1 channel playback
with DTS-ES encoded sources
• DTS Neo:6 – Allows you to hear 6.1

Note in particular the bit that says "With multichannel sources, if you have connected
surround back speaker( s ) and have selected SBch ON, you
can select (according to format):" to make the DTS-ES option available. This is set as follows:

Using surround back channel processing
• Default setting: SBch ON
You can have the receiver automatically use 6.1 or 7.1
decoding for 6.1 encoded sources (for example, Dolby
Digital EX or DTS-ES), or you can choose to always use
6.1 or 7.1 decoding (for example, with 5.1 encoded
material). With 5.1 encoded sources, a surround back
channel will be generated, but the material may sound
better in the 5.1 format for which it was originally
encoded (in which case, you can simply switch surround
back channel processing off).
The table below indicates when you will hear the
surround back channel when playing various kinds of
sources (=Sound plays through surround back
speaker( s )).
• Press SBch (SBch PROCESSING) repeatedly to cycle
the surround back channel options.
Each press cycles through the options as follows:
• SBch ON – 6.1 or 7.1 decoding is always used (for
example, a surround back channel will be generated
for 5.1 encoded material)
• SBch AUTO – Automatically switches to 6.1 or 7.1
decoding for 6.1 encoded sources (for example,
Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES)
• SBch OFF – Maximum 5.1 playback
