This is really a chance to talk about what your future scheming entails.

Where do you see your system in 5 years time?....it could be getting into vinyl, replacing an aging CDP with some sort of streaming, going Active or messing about with Valves.

Maybe you want to maximize what you already have with new cables, mains conditioning, better isolation, or acoustic treatment.

There are those that are totally satisfied, and other than buying a little music have no intention of getting back into the "Rat Race".....but this hobby has a way of ambushing you out of the blue.

As far as I'm concerned, other than checking out some snake oil (cable lifters etc), the only thing that might change is my source, possibly something with tubes in it.....but at the moment the clampers are on.

Interesting topic. I've got a few ideas about where my system will be heading, but in essence I see it as follows.

* If vinyl is still part of my listening, I'll still have the RP3. I've already decided this is the last turntable I'll ever buy. If I use it enough it will stay, but if it sits there gathering dust too much, I will eventually come to the point where I finally say goodbye to the black stuff.

* My next amp will almost certainly be a Creek Destiny 2. This is some way off and I'm happy with the Onkyo for the forseeable future, but I love the Destiny 2 for its sound, build, design and overall quality and I think it would be an amp I could enjoy for years and years.

* In terms of a streaming source I will be going down the Squeezebox Touch route and will eventually marry it with a really good DAC. This DAC may, in all probability, also mean that the CD6003 doesn't get changed at all and remains as a transport. CD is currently about 90% of my listening and won't be going anywhere, although I can see myself streaming more music in the future. As an interim I am re-instating my Squeezebox Classic as it doesn't have the limitations of the Onkyo's streaming features (the Onk doesn't do gapless playback for a start off), but I may well connect it to the Onkyo digitally.

* I'm in the process of a speaker change to Epos and it is unlikely these will change for a significant time as they should pair extremely well with a Creek amp when the time comes.

* With regard to cables, I decided a long time ago that I would stick to relatively affordable examples. The Atlas Equator II is likely to stay as my analogue interconnect of choice and I may well switch to using Atlas speaker cables as well.

That's it really. My biggest concern is listening to the music and enjoying it. I don't want to get into a brand like Cyrus or Naim where you can get carried away with adding box after box and I have no intentions of going down the multi-channel route either.

Oh, not much at all. New speakers, new amp, new music room (or alternatively a speaker that does not yet exist). Time to actually listen. Money to give me total freedom of choice (within 'reason'). Finding audio nirvana. Get a TT (ultimately a Gyrodec). Spend silly money on TT related stuff. Spend leftovers on cognac and gin.

A bit of speaker porn that keeps me going currently

I like your pipe dreams, but what system do you see yourself owning within 5 years....does it include M6i + Proacs? >)

In 5 years I would like to live somewhere that I can seperate out my hifi and AV in to two systems, instead of trying to compromise both in to one. I would love a small streaming system for the second setup, maybe built around some iotas and my REL T3 switched on for Hip hop.

The T3 would retire from AV duties, it's great for a flat but would struggle in a bigger place. I'm very happy with the 805/BR5 av setup and don't anticipate this changing, but I would be suprised if the 805 lived another 5 years. The TV needs to be bigger, and the atv is so cheap I'm sure that will be upgraded every other year.

Thank you for your answer, but....

- Is there any particular cartridge that you have your eye on?
- Does the Creek have any serious competition that you are considering (eg Sugden Mystro)?
- Which Dac do you currently think would suit your needs?
- Speaker-wise, is Epos the only contender, or will something like the Kef R series get a look in?

I agree with you about the Naim/Cyrus temptation and multi-channel does seem dead in the water.

Yeah I reckon Proac D28s/Totem Forests/SF Liutos/Dynaudio Focus 220s and M6i is realistic (2-3 years probably). it all really depends though on how patient I will be both with regards to specific items coming up on the second hand market and consistently saving over 5 years without getting side tracked by other things.

I like it.....upgrading the house to get the hifi sorted. :)

The good Lord gave you spares......which can be sold for upgrading purposes. ;)

I like where your system is heading (with the exception of the Totems).

Ha ha!! Now you're challenging me Cno!

I think I will try another cartridge in the not too distant future. I'm not sure what to go for though. I've heard a lot of positive things about the Denon DL110 but I've tended to like the sound of Grado carts in the past so I need to do some more research. I think the Elys 2 is pretty good, but I suspect I might enjoy my vinyl more with a better cart. That might also require a better phono stage - the 540P is better than the Onkyo's built-in stage but it is still only a budget one at the end of the day.

The Sugden Mystro would certainly be an option as would a used or ex-demo A21. I also like the T+A stuff I've heard and will certainly look into the Power Plant Balanced as another option when the time comes. Whichever of these I eventually end up with will be considered a final purchase in my eyes - something to keep until it breaks.

Speaker-wise I am wedded to the idea of M5i for the forseeable future as I've heard them sound stunning with the Onkyo and they've got plenty to give with further upgrades but, ultimately, there may be one final big upgrade depending on amplification. I'd love some Vienna Acoustics Haydns but I'm also very interested in the Spendor range. I'll stick to standmounts. Regarding the KEF R series I'd have to listen to them again.

The DAC is something I've not given huge thought too. I suppose it really depends on the rest of the system, but I would think something like the Musical Fidelity M1 DAC might suit well.

All this might be after 5 years - I'll be 40 in 6 years and I'd like to think a real long-term system will be my 40th birthday project.

That all depends on finances. I may still have the same system that I have now but if I can save up enough money I'll turn it into a surround sound setup.

AVI ADM9 2.1 speakers at the front and AVI Neutron 2.1 speakers at the back.

I might get rid of my gaming PC over the next few years too and use a PS4 or Xbox 720 instead. I'd like a tablet or laptop computer for the internet and a Sqeezebox Touch for music.

I'd like this sooner rather than later!

I believe that's a very musical Dac and would live to hear it...look forward to your insight (sooner rather than later >) ).

That what i'm hoping!!

Theres one on ebay at the moment but just out of reach for me at the moment, hopfully in 6 months time if one comes up i'll take a punt. Defo update my system and do a little review, that should be me happy for a while after.

How does surround sound work with actives ie. what does the processing?......I'm not familiar with this area, but it sounds fun.
