Hi all

I have just been asked by a close friend to recommend a 42inch TV for around the £1000 mark.

The main feed will be Sky digital and HD-DVD via x-box.

Any thoughts on what would be best? He's not likely to update to SkyHD, so a TV that gives the best SD Digital picture is going to be the way to go. He's not interested in surround sound either.

Cheers

Similar to my spec. I've read a gajillion reviews and posts and narrowed down to Panasonic TH-42PX80 for approx £899. There's a Pioneer PDP-4280 that gets great reviews for quality but it's about £500 more expensive.

Thanks for that, I've had a quick look online and there seems to be about £500 difference between the two. Is the Pioneer £500 better than the Panasonis when fed with the input I've described?

Thanks

The best value telly around at the moment is the PX80 at less than £700 from Sound and vision Online. There is the PZ80 closer to the £1000 mark, but it is FullHD, which some people have an issue with as SD content isn't as good quality as with the HD ready PX80. If you are going to be watching SD on it, I would say that the best telly for £1000 is the PX80... and it is less than £700.... you could always keep the change as comission... hehe

If you look at some of the past threads you'll see the Panny can be bought for nearer the 600 mark and the Kuro for about 500 more. The question is of budget (if your friend has a grand to spend buy the Kuro) or time (all makes have new lines coming very soon).

I'm currently waiting to see what the new release's reviews are like and what happens to the above prices when they become 'old' models. Recent threads seem to indicate that there will be gradual increases in performance, rather than huge leaps, and if this is the case I will buy a 428 (hopefully below the grand mark)and hang on 'til OLED catches up.

Hi WHF team

I have duly passed on the above advice to my friend and he has found a Panasonic TH42-PX8B is this the same as the TH42-PX80 but just with a slightly different code for Comet?

Thanks
