I've seen a couple of 3D films (Avatar, How to train a dragon, Clash of the Titans), and as a result am even more convinced that it is an entirely unnecessary development in terms of what it contributes to my own enjoyment of a film.

Why is it that most (ok, I shouldn't generalise based on the 3 films I've seen, but.......) 3D films are an absolute load of rubbish? For example, the trailers of upcoming films, save for Toy Story 3, I thought, where terrible (e.g. some film about guardian owls, Street Dance 3D, Shrek 4).

If these are the sorts of films that are going to be representative of the technology and the primary driver behind it, then I'm happy to count myself out. I'm probably going to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D and I can't imagine, from the 2D trailer that I've seen, that this will be any better.

Which leads me swiftly to the conclusion, of which I was already aware, that 3D tvs and BD players won't be something I shall be spending my money on any time soon.

I agree, 3D at the moment is disappointing, although not strictly rubbish. I believe that once directors/producers get the knack of it, we will see a big improvement in the 3D content, so don't give up just yet. Like all things new it takes a while to iron out the bad parts.

Alice was shot in 2D then 3D applied after production. I've seen it, and its not 3D to the full sense of the word.

Well, having watched only two 3D movies (Avatar and Alice in wonderland) I must admit that I am into the idea of 3D movies. Although the glaces has a negative impact on the picture quality I am very impressed by the impact of 3D.

When that is said I am not even considering getting 3D equipment at home. I have just upgraded my system during the last 1« year, and as I am no millionere this will have to do for the next 5 years at least. At that time it should also be easier to see if 3D ended up as a success or another failure.
