Recieved my latest copy of total film this morning and it says

1) When Avatar is released it WONT be in 3D at first. James Cameron refuses to release a 3D version till 3D at home has become more established.

2) Star Wars trilogy will be released in 3D but no release date yet.

1) Is more likely to do with the studios wanting to 'double-dip' - to get everyone to fork out for the Avatar Blu-ray and then again for a 3D special edition. We're still being told Avatar 3D Blu-ray will be out for Xmas....

2) That rumour's been around for EVER.

Lucas has been gushing about 3D lately. Wish he'd stop tinkering and just give us the original movies on Blu-ray... (Oh, and Indiana Jones original trilogy, which has been fully restored and ready to go on BD for more than a year now).

So they're all right behind the format then and I thought it was me who had little faith in it taking off. LOL.

Didn't see this thread while I was posting mine re back catalogues.

So can they give back catalogues the 3D treatment?

Guess they must be able to. I suppose its like releasing old films on bluray. Its possible somehow.

Back catalogues were already filmed in higher resolution than Blu ray though.

Andy Grange:Dear Mr LucasInstead of making even more of a mess of the Star Wars franchise, please go into retirement and leave well alone.

Couldn't second that more strongly.

But where there's money to be grabbed...

You mean episodes 4 - 6. The originals. Episode 3 was awful! Remember how long the original trilogy took to come out on DVD. I think we will have a long wait.

11 years too late, I'm afraid.

Davro83:Good point. Dunno how they will, if they do 3D on old films.

There is already a JVC 2D to 3D HD Broadcast Standard converter box available (the IF-2D3D1 Image Processor) which enables real time conversion of 2D material to 3D using some very clever image analysis algorithms. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and the results are quite impressive. Tomorrow, I'm off to a demo of Mistika which is a complete post production suite with a full stereoscopic tool set which can be used to generate 3D images from 2D sources - one of the methods of doing this is by isolating objects by the use of mattes (using a variety of paint tools and trackers) and then enabling them to be placed in 3D space. It is very time consuming but can be quite impressive - the demo sequence from Star Wars I saw about 9 months ago was done this way and it was pretty good. Generating complete 3D from 2D films will most likely entail a mixture of both these sort of devices, using the converters for the majority of the material then using the fine tuning tools where the converters don't work. The amount of work each need to do will obviously depend on the material - dark footage doesn't work particularly well with the converter boxes.

However, one good thing is that these pieces of kit only really work well using HD footage (which includes anything from 35mm film to the latest HD tape formats) as this material has the resolution necessary to enable the tools to work as well as possible, which means that at least we won't be seeing old SD programmes in 3D !

Well, since you are clearly involved in the industry at above consumer level, it might be handy for other users to know where you're coming from...

Is this like alcoholics anonymous......

Hi I'm rob and I've been an online editor in TV for 25 years. I've cut loads of programmes over the years on 2", 1", Betacam, BetaCam SP, Digi Beta, HDD5, HDCAM and HDCamSR, Avid, Final Cut and Avid DS. I don't work for a broadcaster, or a manufacturer, and thought it might be good to share some of my knowledge and experience with yourselves - (Andy C can thank me sometime for spotting the HDCamSR masquerading as a 3D processor on his Sony 3D blog, which was a very interesting read).

so.....am I banished to the peripheries of 'What Caravan's website making sure JD is behaving himself ? If you ever need a hand with home placement testing of any gear, I'm just up the road in Kingston!

Yes, that'll do... Thanks - helps people to know that you have insider knowledge, and aren't just making it up as you go along...

robjcooper:'WhatMotorhome' or 'WhatCable' ?!

Nope, we don't do either of those...

Sorry, didn't mean to make it like AA, but clearly you're bringing a level of expertise to the forums, and it's handy if people understand that...
