Hi, I am in the process of putting together a 2nd hand stereo for a mate for christmas, sourcing stuff from ebay / freecycle etc. I've just bought a lovely early 90's Rotel RA-931 amp and wonder if anyone on here could suggest a pair of standmount speakers that I could get on ebay that would pair with them nicely......what would have been the speaker what hifi would have put with them back in the day? Did anoyone here have one - if so what did you have with it? budget = £50 ish Music = Jazz, classical - so looking for great mid range, a good level of depth and agile to keep up with the orchestral stuff. I hope that people might be able to help.... Cheers ben

My favourite budget system in the 90's was the Rotel amps with Celestion 3's or 5's. Once the Rotel is warmed up, they match really well together - nicely controlled bass which made for easy room placement, and a fairly neutral and open sound. The Celestions liked 4 legged lighter stands rather than single column heavy stands to sound their best.

I had the Rotel RA-931 MK2 + Marantz CD5000 playing through a pait of KEF Cresta 3 speakers (floorstanders) and they sounded good to me.

I would suggest you try the KEF Cresta 2's?

Now I would go for the Mordaunt Short MS20i Pearls. I was amazed by mine given the price, running both from my Rotel RA820 and my Naims - I think greenhomeshop (2nd hand dealer) has a pair for within your budget as well...
