Every December, Linn Records allow you to download one free HD track / day from their website.

I imagine you want a solution that is more short term than that.

Nowhere legal, but it'd be a waste of your time anyway.

I reckon most people here would consider that paying for your music was more appropriate...

Do you mean somehere to download free music legally, or somewhere to download non-free music illegally? If you mean the former, sorry I don't know of any. If the latter, don't be such a thieving scumbag. How about I come round your place and steal something that's yours?

I never really got that argument.

I certainly do not condone illegally downloading music but it cannot be compared with stealing a car or some other physical item.

If I steal your car, you no longer have it. If I copy a track from you, you do.

The only injured parties are the record company and artist (and anyone inbetween), and then ONLY if you would have bought the track/ album otherwise.

I did a great deal of "trying out different music" when Napster was in its prime and the effect it had on me was to nearly quadruple my annual spend on CDs.

Of course I get the same thing from Spotify nowadays. In fact I play through Spotify even if I have the album...

+1!

Furthermore there is a thread here, in which the difference between "high res" and "cd-quality" is discussed, as inaudible for a human person, even with mathematical prove.

You can get free samplers from HD Tracks, Bowers & Wilkins society of sound, mentioned Linn Christmas downloads, 2L, occasional downloads here and there promoting events like Bristol Show etc.

anyway here's a list:

This "effect" is discussed within the book "The Longer Long Tail". The music industry was dead against allowing individuals to listen to music via online services, claiming that the music industry would lose sales, and money. What in fact happened was that some individuals were happy to get free pirate music, but most individuals once they had listened to the pirate copy, and liked the music, then decided to buy the physical CD.

The net result was that for most individuals their spending on CDs increased.

It has taken the music industry many years, to realise that crimilising their potential customers may not be the best strategy - so now they include music downloads/streaming as part of their overall business service.

+1 for the Norwegian 2L website, lots of places allow downloads of free 'Testers' also you can get a few free downloads if you recommend certain websites (Blue Coast Records for example).

I do, however, think you will struggle to fill a hard drive - unless it's a very small one.

Try a USB stick as they are more adaptable.

Soz boss dint think you could steal music unless it was shelved. Ya see i dont have A computer. Never have and never will. Just a cheap nokia Asha phone that does the basics. I get some other fool to fill my memory cards and drives up. Then ya see i can go play out and do manly stuff rather than sat at home growing a arse with hand cream on. So smooth and pail. Or and no nerd would even walk my ally without getting abuse so stealing from me? Ner no chance. Al slap his hand. Might go clip my nails now then type faster mint x

I'll grant you it's not the greatest of analogies. But the fact remains that illegal downloading deprives everyone in the chain of royalties they are rightly due. It's theft by another name. I'm not sure where this notion comes from that illegal downloading is a good thing because most people then go out and buy the real CD. Any researcher that claims it did/does in any great quantities is flawed in the head. It might do in our little HiFi microcosm where we're not happy with someone else's rip of indeterminate quality found on some virus-ridden P2P sharing site, but in the great wide world, most people who illegally download are perfectly happy with their free rip and going to buy it afterwards is the furthest thing from their mind. My evidence? Other than a plea to generally "wake up and smell the coffee", see the post directly above this one.

But, in most cases, it probably does not deprive them of monies they would otherwise have got (because the downloader would not have bought the album anyway) so there's no real deprivation.

It would be useful if there was technology that track you down and hit you with the full force of the law, but sadly I don't think we're there yet. If everyone was like you there wouldn't be any music, because why should everyone involved with the creation of an album be prepared to write it, perform it, record it, mix it, master it, package it, distribute it then give it away all for nothing on a huge global scale. But hey there's no way you're going to have thought that through, nor do you care of course, so long as *you* personally are getting something for nothing. I mean hey why contribute towards all those people's wages and costs like the rest of us do. Paying for music is a mug's game right?

EDIT: Ooo where did his post go before mine? Without it my rant no longer makes sense.

I think the technology is already available, but from there it's a very big step to actually monitor people with the purpose of fining them and building lawsuits. I hope that never happens, it's a bit scary.

By the way: I pay for music (google play music) and I don't for films & series. Until they provide me with a good service similar to spotify & google play music, I will keep downloading films & series. It's my way of helping businesses to focus on what consumers need. It's all very altruïstic

I complained about it - the mods must have then removed it. Hopefully banned the poster too.

Sure, some of them, and Netflix isn't there just yet.

I think you've infringed House Rule No. 6 there.
