£500 challenge

Hi,

Unfortunately the other day my PlayStation 3 decided to pack up, leaving us with no BluRay player. However because of this I have convinced the wife that we should look at getting a surround sound system.

We had a Sony all-in-one system 10 years ago, and i have looked again at all-in-one systems, however i have always wanted a seperates system. My budget is only £500, and this needs to get:

- AV Receiver (Ideally this would allow us to either connect an iphone to, and/or preferably stream Spotify)

- Surround speakers (Small discrete speakers prefered)

- Bluray player

- Speaker cables

Our TV doesn't current support 3D but our nect one will so we would like it to support this.

So my challenge to you guys is:

What is the best system you can put together for sub £500?

Just like to say , when operating to a budget. I'd consider higher quality 2.1 or 3.1 rather than full surround.

I was we'll pleased with my previous 5.1, but having a higher quality 2.1 which was pretty similar in price to my 5.1 is much better.

I think your expectations of the amp's ability in that budget are unrealistic.

I'd have to say an entry level Sony BD player and entry level Yamaha AV amp then look on Eb@y for speakers...

Buy standard speaker cables, which shouldn't cost much at all.

If you look on Richer Sounds you can buy a Yamaha RXV373 & Boston Acoustics Soundware XS SE 5.1 system for £429.95. Both have a 5 star rating on WHF. As for a blu-ray, you can't go far wrong with Sony BDP-S390 for £90. Get a demo though before you buy, make sure you're fully happy.

If you want to start with 5.1 from the off, you can get the RXV473 for £259, and for £140 you can get the Yamaha NSP20 5.1 speaker package. The Yamaha speaker packages may not look like much, and they're not the be all and end all, but they perform extremely well for the money.

Otherwise, you can build the system up bit by bit by starting with a pair of front speakers and adding the centre, rears, and sub at a later date. This will allow you to get a pair of decent standmount,into for around the £200-250 mark. I would normally recommend this route as you'll end up with a better system in the long run

Just add Bluray player.

I would suggest maybe Clicky with either this or this just add speaker cable & HDMI. As an option you could then upgrade the speakers when funds allow.

Thank you to everyone who has come back with possible options. I am going to take time this weekend to look what has been suggested further. I'll post back with what i went for, for those who are interested.
