survivor:Another great avatar from chebbs! How are you getting on with the blue ortofon? (Apologies if you`ve already talked of this on another thread)

Thanks. Just noticed on my avatar that - despite the blue stylus - the "2M" writing on the side of the cartridge body is still in red. (After I went to the trouble to put on a blue LP for the pic). Never mind.

Enjoying the Blue upgrade a great deal when I get a chance to spin a disk.

JoelSim:It didn't sound as good as my dad's old Arcam alpha 6 CD so I don't have high aspirations for it really. But we will see. The smaller the better for the phono stage.

Hi Joel - what cartridge does it have on it? My £85 PL-12d/DL-110 combo beats my Alpha 6 CD given good vinyl, and it's too close to call even with the Beresford in play...obv with well worn vinyl then the digital wins out.

Yep, get a clean 1965 - yellow/black parlophone label - copy of Rubber Soul (stereo or mono), and ask JD if his rather generous offer of a "go" on his knosti is still valid...

If that doesn't sound good, then something weird is going on with the debut...

That would be the OM5E? Invest in an OM 20 needle (about 30?) which fits the OM 5 body and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I looked at a couple of places selling the OM20 stylus and found it costs anywhere between £54 - £97. (UK online shops)

Examples...

http://www.needles-and-spins.co.uk/pd_ortofon_om20_stylus.cfm

There are some companies (Mantra Audio for instance) selling replacement styli described as "suitable for Ortofon OM20" (or similar words) and these are very cheap but not made by Ortofon.

I think that's a stage further than I'm willing to go at the moment. I will just set up the TT and see before rushing into any more purchases. I will, of course, write a full review compared to my CD192 in due course. Having said that it will be 6 weeks or so before I actually get the TT.

I'm stunned. Paid 30? in a German DJ shop 3 months ago- just checked Google Germany and found I got a real bargain, they're 90? now! At those prices, not worth it when you can buy a good new Ortofon instead.

You can buy the phono module and fit it yourself. I fitted one to my A85 - as simple as it gets and will take you 10-15 minutes max.
About your second point. It's a fair point because most people won't need a phono stage so won't be willing to pay a premium for an A85 with one fitted. However, you could always sell it seperately - they hardly come up on eBay etc so I think it would be easy to sell.

With the Arcam module the wife will never found out and nothing to hide for her to find!

JoelSim:

Thanks Chebbster

2 problems with the Arcam phono stage:

1) unplugging and taking to dealer etc

2) no money back upon resale

3) The missus doesn't know that I'd have to buy something new and I can hide the phono box and she willl never know any different

4) I can't count

fatboyslimfast:Or a Denon DL-110 for £57...I would say it beats an Ortofon 2m Blue hands down...

Maybe.

However Joel is not really after an upgrade to the cartridge yet. I was asked earlier in the thread how I was getting on with my new 2M Blue but I was not 'plugging' it, just responding to a question.

My response about the OM20 stylus was just to point out how expensive it can be to buy now.

On the subject of the DL110 (or any moving coil in this instance), the Project Debut III has a magnetic steel platter and I have seen warnings in these forums about using moving coils with magnetic platters.

Also - despite your qualifying experiences of both the 2M Blue and the DL110 - I have been put off of the Denon sound by a friend's DL103R (on a P3-24/TT-PSU set-up) and some QC issues that have come up (regarding the DL160 especially) regularly on various forums. Also the output from high output MC cartridges occupies a 'no-mans-land' in terms of signal voltage levels. Too high for MC phono stages and too low for MM phono stages. I prefer these to be optimally matched to reduce noise.

However despite all this, enough people recommend the DL110 in glowing terms so I am sure it is a fine product but just not for the Debut III with it's magnetic steel platter.

The caveat to this is if the amp is still under warranty, in which case removal of the case by anyone other than Arcam takes your warranty and puts it into touch.

JoelSim:There's not a chance in hell that I will open an electrical component and fit anything. It's not worth the risk.

Makes for good threads though.........
