I'm pondering a new amp to run my celestion A3 (L+R) and A1 (x3,C & L/R surround)

These speakers are 4ohms so I'm veering towards a meaty amp, although they're quite sensitive too so 100 wpc would be adequate, so long as the amps happy with the load.

I want something good with music and with all the bells and whistles for cinema. (doesn't eveyone?)

Currently I'm pondering the Yam and a panasonic blu-ray (have a 50" panasonic PZ70 BTW). I know the speakers really deserve something like the Arcam but it's twice the $$ and a bit of a stretch. Any other recommendations, inc pre/power setups?

Also, any recomendations on tonally simular speakers to test with that a dealer is likely to have in-store?

The Z7 will be great with the Celestions. Another thing to consider is the forthcoming AVR760 from Harman Kardon. The Harman has bags of grunt and if the lower models are anything to go by the flagship should be a winner although it has a long way to go to beat the Z7.

Hi uc

The Yamaha DSP-Z7 is fantasitc and imo the finest vfm (even at £2k) AV amplifier currently avaialble. It should work well with the Celestion's.

Panasonic blu-ray players are also excellent. They work well with Yamaha AV amps and are an ideal match for your tv.

See if you can borrow the DSP-Z7 and have a home demo.

Thanks

Thanks Guys. The yams top of the list at the mo, although the HK looks good if a smidge below the power I had in mind, not that it's that critical. I'm really keen on comparable current speaker recommendations though, just something I can use to shortlist for a possible home demo. The other aspect connected to this is CD playback, I want to audition a reasonable blu-ray eg panasonic vs. a ~£400 Cd spinner vs. a ~ £7-800 blu-ray.

The Z7 will work with everything although we get it to sing on PMCs and KEF XQ. As for a a similar speaker to the Celestions, KEF are probably the closest , perhaps some B&Ws.

Regarding your bluray quest you would be wise to look at the Sony BDPS5000es - it is a remarkable player and cd playback is surprisingly strong, certainly above the £400 level IMO.

Hi, unfortunately sony is one brand I'm not particularly keen on.

I notice HK have a bluray player that would sit nicely if I go for the HK amp- Can anyone comment on it's CD abilities?

I'm thinking perhaps I should wait a few months as, with the HD format settled, a lot of the specialist hifi bods will be working on adding bluray machines to their lineup.

Thanks Ben.

Thats a shame as the Sony player really is exceptional. We have only had the Harman BDP for a week or so but so far it is very good. Nice solid build, easy to use and a good picture. We are still to run comparisons with other players but first off it is a fine machine.

Old thread but searching found this. No way would I use the Yamaha Z7.

Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
0.1% distortion at 47.1 watts
