Xbox 360 upscale

Yes (through VGA / HDMI on the Elite), though it's not a great DVD player in the first place. If you have a dedicated upscaling standalone player I'd use that.

Hi!

I have both a PS3 and 360, and play games mostly on the 360, using the PS3 mainly for Blu-ray.

I believe that the 360 does upscale to 1080p over the HDMI and VGA connections, according to this ("Q. Does the Xbox 360 upscale standard DVD movies?" about a quarter of the way down the page).

I haven't actually tried playing DVDs on the 360 - but now you've mentioned this, I'll give it a try and see how it compares to the PS3 upscaler, and the TV's!

Octopo is spot on. I did a direct comparison with the PS3 a long time ago and the Xbox is completely rubbish in comparison. Great games machine (IMO), rubbish at everything else unfortunately.

Electroman I would much aprecciate your opinion .possibly comparing it to the ps3 upscaling.Because I too prefer the 360 for games.

But there has been a new OS since then!

Still, I would expect it to be inferior to the PS3 in that respect. But I will do some comparisons later and post my conclusions tomorrow!

The only thing that will upscale on the xbox360 is the hd dvd add on..i know this because i have it. The elite version of the xbox360 itself plays dvds but on a hd tv they will not look as good as on the hd dvd add on or on a blu ray player. I would not hesitate to recommend the xbox360 as a games machine, and as it is around 180 quid with a couple games, it is the best value for money machine out there.

It does not need to do anythin else brilliantly, it was not designed as a jack of all trades like the PS3. If you want a games machine then buy the xbox360 as it is clearly the better 'gaming console', if you want a blu ray player then buy a dedicated machine as they are very cheap now.

With games such as Tekken, Soul Calibur, Resident Evil and Final Fantasy now on the Xbox360 and the price of blu ray players falling the PS3 is on its last legs. It can only be saved by a dramatic price cut and a release of some kind of Godly game. Sony won the HD war with the help of PS3 by maketing it as a cheap blu ray player and aiming it an older market but in that they forgot what the Playstation brand was all about..pure gaming fun...the term shooting one self in the foot comes to mind

It doesnt even look like a console, it looks like a electric grill lol

Haha, i was just waiting for that

you gotta admit that pic is quite convincing??? Why would anyone buy a PS3 if you can get a xbox and a bluray player for around the same price and get a couple of games and couple of blu ray movies too?

Goodness knows! I think it's just down to something like personal choice

Incidentally, I still don't regret getting my PS3 at £425 when it was first released - I'm guessing that's pretty incomprehensible for you! Mind you I also don't regret buying the 360 either. Both have their place in my front room - but then I'm quite benevolent.

Funny you should say that, i also had a brand spanking new PS3 when it was first released with 60gb and full backward compatibility. Mine also cost £425, however as there was hardly a decent game being released on it i quickly realised that it was fast becoming a paperweight therefore did the sensible thing and sold it on ebay. It was a shame to be honest as i was really looking forward to it thinking it would quickly over take the Xbox360..but it hasnt so im glad its gone. I cant justify spending £425 on a machine with just LBP, MGS4, GT Prologue, and now Killzone 2 as its best exclusive games, but then thats a matter of personal choice

I too had a PS3. Sold it because it just gathered dust. The xbox is a far superior machine for games, which is all i wanted it for. The blu ray player is the reason why PS3 is selling as well as it is, which is still alot less than Sony had hoped. Back to the original question tho...... i have the 360 elite, connected by good HDMI cable to full HD tv and the DVD playback on it is rubbish!! I used to think it was fine, but then got sony 350 blu ray player and its 10 times better upscaler. Get a seperate dvd upscaler player if you want the best quality....... now back to the xbox vs PS3.... Xbox will always have the better games and exclusives as Microsoft just chuck money at comanys for them! Microsoft paid £25 million pounds to have exclusive download content for Grand Theft Auto 4, which is due real soon. Thats alot of money for extra game content. Microsoft could have got another 3 gears of war exclusives for that price. But im glad they do it as i know Xbox will always have exclusive games. Microsoft now have the final fantasy series which used to be PS3 exlusive.

I tried The Phantom Menace last night on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.

With the 360 set to output at 1080p, the picture was okay - except on panning shots when there was an appalling amount of judder. Resetting it so that it output at 1080i cured the judder.

The PS3 upscaled to 1080p with no problems, and the picture was better, but the 360 picture was okay in isolation.

Ginder:

Actually, I think you'll find that Microsoft designed the 360 to be a digital hub, and before its release they were pushing the media, photo-sharing, comms aspect of it as much as the games side.

Of course, most people don't want that yet, so is mainly used as a games machine.
