AKG Q701 to Beyerdynamic T90's?

I've never been convinced by the AKG's, in fact from the moment I opened the box I was almost disgusted by how cheap and plastically they were. The sound, the mids but more so the highs grate on me and I struggle to listen to them for any extended period. Bass, an area where I know many don't rate them is OK for my listening tastes although I wouldn't mind a little more tightly controlled omph and impact...

I'd be listening through Foobar > Audioquest Jitterbug and an Epiphany Acoustic EHP-02

Thanks for any opinions or advice.

I found the T90 to be brighter and rougher sounding in the treble than the AKG's.

what do you think of your 550s? I like mine..bit like a ear defenders! But sound like they are defending the best in music..if anyone wants to use that catchy phrase? Feel free..lol

love the AKG550's, so much so that they added to my disappointment of the Q701's...I'm gutted because I gave them to my daughter and she won't let me have them back! Great sounding, comfy and built to last the ages...

Any opinions on the Hifiman HE400S? Rave reviews on Amazon.com, little on the UK version mind...

I haven't had any Hifiman headphones, mainly I suppose because they have too many models and changes to existing models, and it's not a company with depth like Beyer or Sennheiser. And I didn't like Mrspeakers' Alpha Dog or Audeze's LCD2 fazor edition. So far the best planar I've heard is the Mad Dog, which is a mod of the Fostex t50rp. Right now I'm going to go look at those Amazon reviews...

Edit: Started with the one-star reviews - biggest complaints are very cheap build, and won't play loud enough with portable devices and phones. Moved up to 2-star and 3-star reviews, and it's mostly more of the same criticisms, but the general drift is that it's barely $300 of sound for $300. I didn't check the 5-star reviews, but I'm sure that they say if you get past the quality issues (get lucky or whatever) and sensitivity/volume issues, then you get a decent sound for $300. I'm usually very careful with my headphones, so the reliability might not be an issue as much as the volume.

Very interesting reply, your time and effort is appreciated. Certain given me food for thought. I generally start on the rave 5 star reviews and then go right to the opposite end of the spectrum the 1 star and assume that those unhappy with their purchase were simply unlucky, overly picky or the kind never to be satisfied . As mentioned above I have a major issue in spending this kind of money and getting cheap shoddy build quality. I will look up the Mad Dog and Fostex's you mention. Regards
