Why not BOSE?

I've only recently moved into the Blu ray world with a Samsung 40" Full HD TV and a PS3, yes I also like games!! I have always enjoyed music and had a Technics seperates system with BOSE speakers for over 10 years. A few years ago I changed to a 5.1 Pioneer home cinema system. I am in the process of building an extension with the view to having a proper home cinema system and hence I want to set it up properly from the start.

Unfortunatly in Dublin there aren't many good Hi-Fi dealers, in fact there is really only 1. He recomended the Yamaha DSP-AX863SE amp which from research appears to be the business. His speaker reccomendation was the BOSE Acoustimass 10 system. I have been unable to find anywhere that independantly reviews BOSE. I have purchased the last few months of What HIFI and have searched this web site but no one mentions BOSE. Am I missing something?? I was looking at the KEF KHT 2005.3 but can't find them in the Rebublic of Ireland.

Also it will probably be cheaper for me to go to Northern Ireland to purchase due to price and the current sterling rate as I can't find a web site that delivers to the Republic of Ireland unless anyone out there knows of one? Help Please

Hi Dublin HiFi, I feel your pain, as i also live in Dublin and trying to get stuff here is a bit difficult..........however all is not lost

I dont know anything about Bose, i think you will get much better speaker package to go with your system than the Bose...

Check here: www.superfi.co.uk for the Kef KHT 2005.3 or Q Acoustic 1010i both recent award winners and they deliver to Rep of Ieland for £30

Also as regards your Yamaha, anything on Richer Sounds UK site can be ordered by the lads (there sound) in Belfast, i didnt see the Yamaha AX863SE but im sure they could get it for you.........A few alternatives to the Yamaha may i suggest Onkyo TX-SR 606 500Euro, Sony STR-DG2400ES 500Euro and the Denon 1909 600Euro..............

If you dont fancy the drive to Belfast you can get the Yamaha in Peats for 800Euro, and the KEF 2005.3 for a cool 1,000Euro!!!!!!

Another suggestion is the excellent Yamaha DSP-AX763 can be got for 550Euro..................

Good luck with your choices.................

BOSE has been discussed here often, and I think the general opinion, including that of WHFSV, is that if style and size are absolutely critical, they may be worth a look, but you will pay well for the privilege. There are many much better systems at less money even allowing for extra costs for shipping to Ireland. The Kefs are uniformly recommended as a great buy.

It might be worth calling some of the places who retail equipment at good prices, for example Peter Tyson, based in Carlisle, and ask if they will ship to Ireland. They may do if you ask nicely.

I will try him this week. I see his price for the Yamaha Amp is amazing.

I was going to wait till after Christmas and hopefully pick up the equipment at a bit of a discount. Even 10% would be great and my room won't be ready till February.

I am set on the Yamaha DSP AX863SE so it's only a matter of getting the best price. It's the speakers that are confusing me. I'm not sure between the BOSE AM 10s or the KEF 2005.3. They are basically the same price. The guy in the HIFI shop reccomended the BOSE but from my understanding the sub breaks down the signal so I can't understand how you get the best from the amp if the Bose is interfeering with the way it gets to the speakers. Does that not impact on the quality of the sound??

Are the KEF better value for money and will my wife be happy with how the look in the room!!!!

Yes

Dublin HiFi:

and will my wife be happy with how the look in the room!!!!

Show her a picture of some really huge, monstrous speakers - in comparison, the well-turned, compact KEFs will seem a dream!

Thanks for that. Wasn't sure and the guy in the shop was big into the BOSE. I wasn't familiar with KEF until I started researching through your magazine and web site so wasn't sure.

As I said there isn't much option in shopping for HIFI equipment in Dublin.

I take it that I will get a better sound from the KEF and they have the option of adding 2 additional speakers to make it a pure 7.1 with the yamaha amp where as the BOSE is strictly 5.1 option?

Check out the B&W MT-30s as well. The PV-1 sub has a really stunning design.
