Only just come out and Oppo are still dealing with some issues with firmware upgrades.

Is there anything you would like to know about it? I have had mine for about a month now and really love it!

Here's a review. Bought mine last week from Richer Sounds.

It rocks. Buy one now. Sell one of your children if you have to. I thought 4K on Amazon or Netflix was pretty good. This is in a different league. Just sat through the latest three Star Treks and the LEGO movie. Most impressive to the point I'm regretting getting the smaller of the two LG OLED models!

Now if only we had some more titles. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings might be nice

Now that the format has got to 4K resolution, it's time to stop using "DVD" to describe it. It's a 4K blu ray player, not 4K DVD player.

There are still 'rafts' of new and old content (especially TV series and b&w movies) that are still only available on DVD.

Does the Oppo 4k thing play DVDs?

We are not all 'slaves' to a format (people who won't buy content unless it's on the latest technology) so I would hope DVD (and Blu-ray) 'backwards compatability' will continue for as long as disk spinners are made.

I was referring to this post describing as a "4K DVD player". The correct term is "4K blu ray player" or "UHD player".

I have had a few days with an Oppo 203 - I couldnt resist I had to see what 4K would be like on my pj - to actually see it at its native resolution. Still not actually seen it because no content I saw was a 4K DI - only 2K DI's upscaled

Tale of 2 halfs really - Is the Oppo worth buying if you only have SDR and Rec 709 kit like the Sony VW500 PJ

Initially I was extremely dissapointed in both picture and sound.

Blu Ray looked good as you would expect - so good there was no real jump when you went to the UHD discs. I could see a bit of resolution improvement but something wasnt right.

I had no time Friday a pal came over on Saturday so I had the day messing about with him showing him my system improvements and he wasnt struck on the image of UHD on my PJ also.

Just before I was about to throw in the towel I realised a few things I hadnt thought of before. Thanks to Gels videos I had a semi point of reference of what The Shallows should look like.

So many hours working on it - I have managed to get my display to accept 4K BT2020 colour (using strip metadata feature) and 4.2.2 10 bit (thats outside its spec). To compensate for the display change I have had to boost the colour control a lot about +20 from memory and run the contrast max and open the PJ Iris to max (PJ already on High Lamp mode) - then raise the brightness level in the player picture menus to remove the black crush caused by the not correctly functioning strip meta data feature of the player. Still need more test time on this to get it perfect. Strip meta data gives BT2020 colour without HDR btw

I didnt have much time with it last night - but the resultant UHD disc image was at last worthy of recommendation. Staggeringly good in fact. I will post up a video later if I can - just gives an idea of what I am on about.

The 4K upscaling on this player is outstanding - upscaling Blu Ray to 4k 4.4.4. chroma makes them look literally amazing - I put 300 on just for a sit down and relax dont need pay attention watch and I was in awe of the picture. I had no idea it was actually that good a picture for this film - the level of detail there was a real shock - it did show up the special effects somewhat though :)

Back to the tale of 2 halfs - I have had some issues with this player as other people have, I watched Dark Water Horizon and had a few issues with sound and a slow down in picture so if you buy one be mindful of this. Lots of complaints about the player from users - Oppo havent got it working perfect yet.

So if you have older kit that is 4k SDR and only REC 709 is it worth buying the oppo - I would say tentatively yes depending on the dsiplay size and viewing distance - it does upscale 1080 to 4K amazingly (the oppo 103 / 105 might be as good though already not sure) and yes for UHD content - but it is likely not going to be a plug and play sit there in awe situation for you if your experience is like mine. The opposite will be true and you will need to get to work on it but the benefit is there, even without HDR.

I now have 2 seperate picture modes 1 for Blu Ray and 1 for UHD - I will have to make player settings changes when I watch 1 style disc or the other which is no biggy on this player - because it allows you to make major changes on the fly during content with only a bref shut off of the picture. You dont need to stop the film go out to the menu screen makes changes, load the film back up again - that makes all the difference in the world. Having seperate picture modes is also no biggie and no different - most displays auto switch over to a another mode when you start the content - and they generally max contrast and back lighting and likely boost the colour as well so thats no different to what I am doing. I have just had to do it manually

The player itself is very fast - starts fast, loads films fast - the menus and remote are really responsive. The remote is outstanding - what a remote - best remote ever - the auto light up idea what a great idea - the man at Oppo who thought if that deserves a raise.

Its fairly well built as a player - it feels like a toy compared to my Marantz UD7007 - compared to that its light, feels cheap and the drive feels clunky and cheap by comparison - but its good enough, dont expect that level of build from it though - however it being much slimmer is actually a benefit.

I am under no illusions here - I was not getting the full benefits of whats there in the content - no HDR and my PJ doesnt do much of the WCG spectrum. So I know it will get a lot better than this.

Also worthy of note - I sit about 8 feet from a 100" 2.40:1 scope PJ screen - so its a big screen that close a 55" tv at 15 feet is going to be completely different to this.

What are the best discs you have tried so far Gel?
All of them I think now, but my favourites are The Swallows, Lucy, in the heart of the sea, The Martian, The Da Vinci Code, Salt, Snow White and the Huntsman, the lone survivor and can't remember the rest. I think I have 14 4k discs now and love them all with the Oppo, before I was trying them and selling them on AV Forums, I haven't sold one since I got the Oppo, apart from Star Trek and Beyond which was a Xmas present from my sister - I am not into Star Trek though. I got a lot of titles from HMV 2 for £30. And Amazon when they were £13.49. I am thinking about buying the Life of Pi again because that was one I did like. And now it's part of the 2 for £30 on HMV.

Where did you buy or borrow your Oppo 203 from? Because I know people were borrowing them from Frank Harvey and trying them out. I thought I might try and amp in the future from Frank Harvey if they would let me.

Cheers Gel - for me at £20 odd a disc I am not rebuying old upscaled content thats just crazy.

I wont watch the film just look at clips and as they are only 2K DI's upscaled for me they dont warrant the premium. For adding HDR to the party it may make more sense but not for me. I bought 2 films from HMV the weekend it cost over £40 - that hurts, its very expensive.

Next one for me to buy is Sully as that is a true 4k DI shot at a higher res - that should be the one to show off actual 4K res over 1080p to see if is worth the premium

Just got Life of Pi and Criminal from HMV for £30. Life of Pi does look fantastic on the Oppo.

Bought Sully in regular Blu-ray and watched it upscaled on a 4K TV. The picture looked very good and the CGI is very very good, not brilliant, and slow enough to actually appreciate (unlike Doctor Strange for example).

Haven't had a chance to watch it upstairs with the Atmos soundtrack yet, but I'm betting it's good.

The story and pace? Well, they only had 2 and a bit minutes total in the air, and the movie is more about how the heroes were treated by the media and the NTSB (as being irresponsible) and how the heroes were proven right.

Bought it from Richer Sounds last week, Video HDMI out direct to my LG OLED 55E6V and audio out direct to my reciever. Absolutely blown away by the picture quality...it's like looking out of a window. HDR makes so much of a difference too
