My sub has started humming since I changed AV receiver. It does so when just plugged in only at the mains, even away from my kit. I'm expecting it to be the end of the RSW12. Any ideas of an alternative? Cannot be much bigger and I can't go above £700 really.

BK Electronics XXLS400 maybe? Or maybe WHFS&V's favourite the B&W ASW610

I need a downward firing Sub - because of OH acceptability :) so the XXLS400DF is what I'm thinking of, otherwise I'd seriously be going for the ASW610, as it's a superb sub for the price/size...

Hi Gerrardasnails

The RSW-12 is still a good sub and i'll say try and get to the bottom of this issue before changing the sub. What sub cable are you using please?

All the best

I was using a QED Signature sub cable but moved my equipment to another room and needed 13m. I have a Van Damme cable now which ended up being a little short and so I extended it with a RCA coupler and another 2m cable of the same VD. All was fine with my old receiver. I then unplugged and replaced with the new one and the problem has developed. I'm fairly sure that the cable is not the issue as the noise is there when the cable is unplugged.

I was happy with the RSW12 so ideally a fix would be good. I'm waiting on MA to come back to me.

Just spoke with MA. They have suggested I take the sub to my local Sevenoaks (where I bought it) and get them to check it over. They believe it's the amp that's had it. If so, they will replace with the RXW12 amp for about £200. Cheaper than a new sub of the same quality!

By the way, my new Yamaha is so good that even without my sub, the sound quality is fantastic!

Hi Gerrardasnails

Thanks for your reply.

The reason i asked about the sub cable is because i've come across some AV amp/sub woofer combinations where the sub woofer cable has caused hum. In these situations i would then suggest using a QED sub woofer cable as so far i've not had any issues with them.

Anyway, hopefully this matter will be rectified quickly and economically. £200 is a fair price particularly for the Silver RXW-12 amp pack.

Btw, good hear that you're pleased with your Yamaha RX-A3010 AV receiver :)

All the best

Thanks Rick. I agree about the QED sub cable but I needed 15m and the cost was too high. To be honest, I've been quite impressed with the Van Damme cables. Not in the same league as my previous cables but at a 10th of the price, still very good.
