Looking for some advice / opinions on speaker choice, I have ordered myself a Marantz SR6003 ( couldn't wait for the review ) but have also ordered a set of KEF KHT2003.5's both in nice silver... the main reason for my choice of the KEF's is they can be wall mounted without having to get additional brackets and they get a fairly decent rating, however I am now wondering if they are the right choice.

Price wise they are at the top of my budget but I have also been looking at the highly rated Q Acoustics 1010i 5.1's which are a tad cheaper than the KEF's.

Has anyone got any recommendations on the best choice from the two I have mentioned, my usage would probably be 60/40 music/movies ?

Also can't get floorstanders or a nice center speaker due to the fact that I have two young kids, and anything within reach to them is fair game as far as they are concerned !!

I have one week to make my mind up

Thanks in advance

did some google work and got led straight back to these forums, whadyya know ! anyway seems the general opinion is that the q-acoustics are better for music than the KEF's so that answers my question, now how do I make them childproof ??

Speaker choice is a very subjective issue and what might sound wonderful to one person might not to someone else for example a lot of people inc. WHF rave about the Tannoy Revolution Signatures and I couldn't get on with them at all and sent them straight back as they were lifeless and.....I won't go on but I hated them. What I am trying to say, is you really need to demo both amp and speaker together and try different equipment to get an idea of what the differences are and identify what you like. Your ears will tell you better than anyone else's opinion.

The Q-Acoustic range and Kef 2005 range are well regarded and I'm sure you will be more than happy with either.

I know what you mean about kids and floorstanders but if the floorstanders have a stable plinth (not Tannoy!) e.g. MA Silver, you should be okay. Also, fitting speaker grilles and a bit of discipline should ensure your kids keep their mits away. I would definitely fit the grilles otherwise expect the tweeters/cones etc. to get pushed in and inevitably damaged. You will need to carefully site speakers away from inquistive hands, so perhaps consider wall mounting or on shelving. Speaker stands can be stable if filled but obviously the thin 'matchstick' type stands aren't very stable and can easily be knocked over.

Just out of interest where did you get your SR6003 and how much for?!!

You listen to music most of the time so get a stereo system.

d4v3pum4 - I have heard KEF 3005SE's (not 2005.3's) at a friends place paired with the lovely Denon AVR3808 and this sounded pretty damn good, yet another friend swears by his Q-acoustics !

My Marantz is on order with RS for £630, should be in tomorrow -- fingers crossed.

Eddie Pound - I have just cleaned out my old stereo setup and PC/Home theatre setup so I want to try and get the best of both with a sinlge setup - under a cetain budget too !
