Hi folks,no gripes about home theater playback or sq :)

I have started streaming flac music with the avr,now i would like to improve that aspect of the system.

Some tracks sound good, others awful, now my question's are..

What should i look at upgrading;front 2 speakers for stereo playback....?(i do have some in mind)

Is the avr dac anygood, should i add a seperate one....?

Is it just DLNA?

any suggestions realy appreciated.

cheers

Graham

I'm assuming all your FLAC files were directly ripped full fat, and haven't been up/down converted at some point.

If you've got the original source CD - do the FLAC versions sound better/same/worse than the original. That is, if you think the the original sounds rubbish, it rules out the DLNA/FLAC side of things.

If the original sounds rubbish and sounds rubbish on a different, equally good source/amp/speaker (take it round to a friend's house), then it could just be a rubbish CD - I've got some like that...

Actually, in what way do you think they sound "awful"?

EDIT:

I think the Yamaha DAC is OK - can you use Pure/Direct on the amp when playing back two-channel music over DLNA to reduce the circuitry in use - this does improve two-channel playback

I think it's the cd's themselves to be honest, you know the realy old ones that have been with you for donkeys years

The flac sounds different, more muddier?!....the volume i can listen to has realy changed too,too much volume and everything goes breasts up......but i think your right scene...i need (and desire) decent stereo playback.....so speaker upgrade it is.

Cant realy use 2channel stereo as the speakers are not realy up2 it,but will 'av a play :star:

Very interested in adding a pair of kef100's into the equation...

cheers

With yamaha, if you've set up the speakers as small, I think it will run "Pure/Direct" as 2.1 - which with the KEF3005SE should sound OK.

But, you're right if you want proper stereo - proper stereo speakers are where it's at. But beware...

1. If your front pair don't tonally match your centre, you will lose integration on the 5.1 (which is not so good)

2. You'll lose a little in the front to rear integratinon, so when sounds sweep around in 5.1 it might sound a little less good (though this will be less noticeable).

The yammy should compensate for a lot of this, and using different KEF's may well reduce the issue.

I will just say this was the probelm I had and I went from KEF2005 -> that with MA Silver 8i front pair - now look what I've got  - it's a slippery slope...

I know i know.....slipery slope....well,i'm on my arse!!

The mrs is going mad, after spending over £800 on speakers, less than a year ago, i want to upgrade!!!

David from cov(with whom i think i shall go and see with a fist full of dollers) has already told me adding the R100'S to the front L&R will work, and improve stereo considerably....but as you said.....a very slipery slope....hmmm.....need a better center....then the sub

I have to content myself,am limited in the size of speakers i can get past her,and...oh the money

Keep mentioning the R100's to her...said her bonjovi would sound sooo much better :hand:

I'm using 7channel at the moment, but will use 3.1 for a while, see if i can get used to it,but i have turned the front pressence off(now 5.1)this sounds better....

Doesn't Pure/Direct on yammys play full range to front L/R only and NO Sub???

I thought pure direct did this on all makes, direct usually uses the sub.
Not that I can remember from both of my Yamaha amps. In straight mode it will be 2.1 but in Pure/Direct all circuitry is switched off etc... To improve musicality from L/R only.

I maybe wrong......

No - I checked you're right  Think my brain was a bit on holiday...

Hmm - Large speakers L&R - that's what I went for.
