Where do you buy CDs?

I buy a mixture of mainstream & obscure from Frank Martin to Lady Ga Ga. One advantage of iTunes is being able to buy a single song from an album - I save a fortune.

Buy your music where you like, but please get your facts straight. As the links above show, all of the artists you claim are not stocked by Amazon (Nils Frahm, Field Rotation, Epic45, Fabio Orsi ) actually are. One of the primary reasons I use Amazon is that they almost always have what I am looking for.

What I should have qualified my statement with is that Amazon stock limited releases by said artists. For instance, I can purchase the "Music For Wobbling" mp3 by Nils Frahm (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_18?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=music+for+wobbling+music+versus+gravity&sprefix=music+for+wobbling%2Caps%2C180&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amusic+for+wobbling+music+versus+gravity) - but NOT the CD.

The new Fabio Orsi album "Procrastination" is not available from Amazon at all. It's like it doesn't exist. Copies of both the LP and CD are available from Norman Records and Stashed Goods.

You're correct regarding Epic45 (though several releases are missing which are available at Norman Records). The new Field Rotation album is available on Amazon (delivery in 10-12 days so I'm guessing that it's not in-stock), but it's not the coloured vinyl edition.

Regarding the comment about CDs being a commodity and buying cars from Argos, maybe HMV should have considered selling pot plants, pet food and bedding as a "rescue plan" !!

In my place (Philippines), I buy from Odyssey, SM (for new CD's), and for 2nd hand, I go to Quiapo. Sometimes, I find new ones there, too.

How much do you pay for new cds in the PIs?

Normal Cd's cost PHP 400 (Phil currency) US$ 9.20, special compilations like the one I previously bought (Kelly Clarkson greatest hits with DVD) was PHP 550.

For 2nd hand CD's around PHP 200 (US$ 5), while hard to find CD's or old CD's out of circulation already and for collectors only, the price is negotiable. You have to haggle with the vendor. By the way, this is original CD and not pirated. Pirated CD's abound for PHP 35 (US$ 0.80) but I don't patronize them in order to keep the music industry alive.

Maybe they should not have stocked so many dvds when the market was going away from buying such items. My local HMV must have 60% dvds and 20% cds. If they had been more specialised they may have not gone under as mainstream music can be bought elsewhere for less (supermarkets/Amazon).

As for Folks who have been patiently waiting for Procrastination to be released since last year are hopefully enjoying the growing humor. MAybe you don't get the joke.

Indeed, they are a friendly bunch in my local Argos, probably better than a lot of car dealers. As it happens, I bought my last car online and it saved me thousands. There are a few things I would not buy online (speakers and ski boots come to mind) but most stuff can be researched pretty easily these days and online is cheaper and easier.

Completely agree, a main dealer tried to rip me off years ago and I have used a small independent ever since. IF you have a timing belt, you do have to have it replaced on schedule - my sister in law didn't and had a badly damaged engine when it went.

Yes that is true but mine had a chain, I asked an independent garage for a quote and within 20 secs he said you don't need to change the belt as its a chain, well the main dealers should have known that. There were various other things as well, overall it saved me about £600 going away from the main dealer. The problem is for the first so many years you have to go there because of the warranty.

In london you have rought trade (east and west). Rough Trade East does mail order but is probably not that cheap. If you visit the store they have lots of live in store events and lots of listening posts with stuff you wouldn'ty probably find otherwise.

There's also Sister Ray (which took over the selectadisc shop in berwick street soho); and a whole host of secondhand Music and Video exchange shops in notting hill; soho; camden; greenwich. Motly hang around these and their bargain areas to see what they've got for not much cash.

Otherwise like everyone else Amazon / Amazon Marketplace. Though for real rareties I have used Discogs as well.

There are some more music shops around the E1, N1 area, and a large one in Brick Lane. For Jazz Ray's Jazz is still going but now in Foyle's bookshop.

I usually buy direct from the labels themselves when possible - not really into commercial or mainstream music. Otherwise Amazon, Juno, Boomkat or Discogs for all my deep house, dubby music, ambient, deep techno/ Idm/ electronica.

I am sure if you messaged them they will probably sent you a replacement or a refund for the missing Cd and probably won't ask you to return the ''hosework music'' :O :rofl:

Discogs is excellent for some of those hard to find CDs and vinyl. Some of the rarer CDs that I have seen on Amazon have been a LOT cheaper on discogs.

Amazon and charity shops. Really couldn't care less about how much tax Amazon pays. Who pays Amazon's corporation tax? Consumers.

I also feel no sympathy for HMV or the struggling major record labels. I remember very well paying upwards of £15 for albums in 1995. That's over £21 quid an album in todays prices according to the consumer price index.

Interesting to hear that some people like to have a physical browse. I find the online stores far more useful for finding new music. In fact, most of the music I buy and listen to now I find online (although not into the whole spotify thing). Latest discovery: Hidden People by Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman - check it out.

I'm surprised so many people buy music from supermarkets. They generally stock about 40 CDs, mostly x-factor and compilation albums. They're missing a trick as far as I can see. Talk about a captive market.
