When music becomes to much (emotionally that is)

Strange question, but have you ever been listing to music on a decent hi-fi and either because it reminds you of something or because the singer has such strong emotion comming accross you have to stop listing for a while ?

I should probably not admit this on an open forum :shifty: but I have been moved to tears of joy and sorrow whilst listening to music , in fact the emotional swings that some music can trigger in me is highly addictive .

Not at all, I've never got the whole emotional thing. I just like a good tune.

No offence Makka. :)

But I find it very odd that you don't ever feel emotional when listening to music.

I find lots of music to be emotional. It can feel happy, sad, funny or even angry at times.

Sometimes it can be the music bringing back memories or reminding me of someone/something at other times the music can just be emotional on it's own.

Why would I be offended, obviously I am happy if I enjoy the music but I figure the question is more about feeling sad or overcome.

Being a dad I can easily get emotional over lots of stuff, even soppy stuff in films but never had any negative emotions to music, even stuff that's supposed to be depressing.

I cry at music *all the time*.

Me too. Like a baby.

It has to be a good system though. I can't cry listening through cheapo headphones.

It's mostly the music (and therefore mostly through headphones). I do remember welling up once at how good an MF pair sounded through Tannoy Revolutions.

The Anna Netrebko "Traviata" always makes me cry and indeed everybody I have bought it for has the same experience.

I find myself choking up from time to time but I think a lot of that has to with the prevailing mood and the circumstances.
I normally do not listen to music while driving, I find it distracting, but a few years ago after a particularly long and tough day at work I put the radio onto a music station, very unusual, and a couple of songs, back to back brought tears streaming down my face to such an extent that I had to stop on the hard shoulder to recover.
I was on the M25 at the time, fortunately it was late and pretty quiet, not something I am going to repeat in a hurry.

Edited to make sense.

Just changing tack slightly.

What the most beautiful piece of music to you? :)

The happiest piece of music ? :bounce:

The saddest piece of music ?

For me the most beautiful is The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams.
Just having a little think on the other two........ :?

Most beautiful...

"Romance" from Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. (Short and very sweet.) First encountered a few years ago at the beginning of Jonathan Meades' autobiographical programme 'Father to the man' and loved it since.

Happiest? Every Christmas morning it has to be 'For unto us a child is born' by Handel. (I prefer this version after all the others I have tried.)

I don't know about the saddest. I avoid sad sounding music. Sorry.

I've always loved Beethoven's 7th symphony. But, after The King's Speech, it went to another level for me. For some reason, having the beauty of the music tied to an incredible visual image/storyline created magic in my mind.

Beauty - Victoria "Requiem" (Tallis Scholars on Gimell)

Happy - Beethoven 7th Symphony (Wagner called it "the apotheosis of the dance")

Sad - La Traviata as above

Chris

PS Having said that I think the Bartok 3rd Piano Concerto says more about the mid-20th century than any other piece of music and is beautiful, happy and sad which relects that period of history.

Too many to mention. One of the reasons I spend so much on this hi-fi hobby is how important music is to me. And how it moves me, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
