Whats all the fuss about upscaling?

Alot of people on here do seem to go on about upscaling standard dvds to 1080p etc, & that if a certain player isnt up to the job they write it off, i personally IMO do not see what all the fuss is about to be honest? As when i watch standard dvds i always watch them in 576p & the picture quality is fantastic, i can even say some dvds look very close to HD whilst watching in 576p.I find when i watch DVDS in 1080p they look some what "washed out"! I have the pioneer lx70a bluray player so the upscaling to 1080p is up there with the best, but even with this player i still prefer 576p. I recently watched "the ring" on dvd the other night & id forgot to set the resolution to 576p, so the dvd was set to 1080p but i could tell straight away that it was set to this as it looked washed out as soon as i set it to 576p all was restored, full colours, nice detail etc does anybody else have any views on this?

Well, when you leave the DVD player on 576p, your Panasonic TV is doing the upscaling (otherwise the picture would be a small box in the middle of your TV). So if you can find a DVD player which has a better upscaling chip in it than your TV, you'll notice the picture quality is even better than it is now - that's what the fuss is all about.
But if you're happy with your picture then don't worry about it.

What prof says. Either your player upscales, or your TV does(or your AV amp). Some TVs are better than some players, some are not.

Try a Denon DVD-A1XVA...

Try a Denon DVD-A1XVA...Thanks for that, i see what your saying? i guess it does depend on the players capabilities of upscaling etc now i may sound dumb here but how do you know what component is doing the upscaling? like prof says that with my player set to 576p the tv is doing the upscaling, so if i set my player to 1080p then the player is doing the upscaling? is that right? & how do you set the amp to do the upscaling? id love an explanation on this? if anybody can much appreciated??

Spot on. From what I can see here, your amplifier doesn't have any upscaling facilities built in so this isn't an option for you I'm afraid. As I say though, if you're happy with the picture provided with your TV upscaling, then I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Or maybe your TVs own upscaler is pretty good?
