What would my speakers sound like with 125 watts to play with?

So I'm listening to Paul Simon 'Adios Hermanos' and it sounds great - fantastic song. But my amp is only putting out 30W/channel, which is at the bottom end of the range specified by Mission for the 752s (25 to125W). What would i notice if i had that extra 100W to give them?

It depends on the nature of the 125W you give them. Your amp may only manage 30W but it might have a stiff power supply with a good current output to control the drive units. If the additional power is volt rich then you'd get more volume but may sacrifice some control. If the 125W is high in current then you'll get a lot more control and volume!

Also, the quality of the first few Watts is very important in order to get a high resolution sound.

It all depends on the amp!

Pretty damn amazing Dave. My 717 is conservatively rated at 85wpc but rated at service as being around 100. Sounds pretty damn good to me. Better control of the drivers and though the 217 was good, I know what I prefer now. Those speakers will absolutely sing with better amplification driving them.

It would play more loudly before the onset of clipping distortion, but not twice, let alone 3 times as loud. It might even sound better at comparable volumes because of the greater current capacity to cope with impedance dips if driving "difficult" speakers. 30W when used with efficient easy (read flat impedance) to drive drive units would be more than loud enough - the difference in perceived loudness between 30W to 300W for a given speaker sensitivity, is the same as going from an 85dB/W sensitivity to 88dB/W.

I agree with igglebert on this one, quality is better than quantity when it comes to power amps, if your amp sounds grainy when turned up then adding 100watts will just amplify the grain even more, if it sounds good at good levels then try changing the speakers for an easier load. My amp is only 36watts but is more than enough for the spendors. Remember some of the best ( and most expensive ) amps made have a low wattage rating ( audionote ).

I'm definitely for quality over quantity, and I love my little 217. Although I definitely aspire to one of the bigger X17 Sansuis.

It seems I'm not immune to hifi curiosity!

there is a 517 on ebay that needs a bit of work.could be worth a look to get one on the cheap.i have a 417 and its the best bit of hifi kit i have ever had.i also have a 217 and the 417 is night and day better.the 217 is a very good amp.but the bigger x17,s have a better fuller sound.and so much power .hope you find one

Probably worse - unless you are prepared thousands on the amp. Cheaper amps with high watts are generally very poor quality. Better off sticking with what you have. As a broad statement, the question of watts is over-estimated and much misunderstood.
