It's another on my list of vinyl wants.

And don't forget about Hovercraft "Akathsia". :p

Is it as good as Experiment Below, BBB?

It's similar, but different, but definitely worth having. Dig deep Charlie. :)

It's definitely going on my list. Experiment Below is so good but this sounds up there too.

I've been sifting through and playing bits of these. Some previous RSD purchases, some just stuff I'm coming across in the stacks of racks.

The Last Sessions - Mississippi John Hurt

Blood - Franz Ferdinand (a rather pointless attempt at an "in dub" LP, for me. Not as good as hoped for. Don't even like FF but figured they'd benefit from a dub overhaul. They should leave it to Sherwood et al).

Greenbullfrog - a relic from early teen heavy rock years. Not subtle but nice and raucous "supergroup" session.

Wise Up Ghost - Costello/The Roots. I love this. Although my wife added her dollop of rock criticism when she heard it was EC, one of her heroes, playing with The Roots. "He should grow up and stop trying to rap!" Mmm.

The Driver - Buddy Rich Band. My Dad gave me this yesterday. It's great, straight ahead early 60s stuff. Lovely fat, flat mono copy too.

Celebracion De la Ciudad Natal - MMJ. More awe and wonder live. Includes one of my top 5 versions of their masterpiece, Dondante.

Into Battle - The Art Of Noise. Clinical. And bloody annoying.

Experiment Below - Hovercraft. The more I play it the more I realise what a great, great slab of layered sounds this is. For maximum pleasure, play it loud, as they say. Mrs.CJ is at work, needless to say.

I knew you'd like it Charlie. There's a few other things to look out for too.

This was recommended to me and it's a great LP of blues rock. Featuring various guests ( Mick Taylor, Hubert Sumlin, Dr.John) this is a fabulous recording, and comes on classy red vinyl. A beautiful, dynamic recording.

Moved onto -

Dire Straits - Making Movies

Ditto, so well produced. Brothers In Arms next up - now that is a really well produced slab

Dire Straits are just a splendid band. Great songs, amazing musicianship and, as you say, their albums were recorded and produced beautifully.

I'm disappointed to not see wonderfully titled "The Fuc*ing C**ts Treat Us Like Pri*ks" next to the bands name.

I'd buy that album for the title alone. :)

The Psychedelic Furs*

* found it today BBB whilst in a second-hand shop. Cover very poor condition, vinyl looked decent. £2. Cleaned up well. It's different to Forever Now, as you and others may have said. They come across like the harbingers of nascent goth. In a good way. Didn't realise it was a 1980 release. I think I've got my chronology mixed up. I had it in my head as 83/84 and FN as 1985. I'll google. . .

I think it sounds very New Wave, though I sort of undrstand where you're coming from, it's the voice isn't it?

Speaking of his voice, there are occasions on that album when he actually sounds like a Dalek. :)

Does your copy crackle on the intro to India?

Talking of parts of songs that sound like something else, during this song there's a sax solo, but when it first kicks in on 1.52, it actually sounds like Sweep (from Sooty and Sweep) being illegally entered by Matthew Corbett. (You'll know what I mean).

[/quote/]

Yes it does. Is that a Steve Lillywhite production signature then?

And yes, it's voice that is so mesmeric. Amongst other things. My teenage daughter averted her gaze from Netflix-addiction in the other room to ask who was this David Bowie copyist I was playing. More so on Forever Now, but I can see where she's coming from.

I do remember some of the songs now I've played it all the way through. Good stuff.

Currenrly playing,another £2 purchase from today's haul:

Abyssinians - June Tabor

I'll have to settle for your florid description, as it won't load on my stoopid iPad.

I can't go to sleep with thoughts or otherwise of Matthew Corbett being burglarized in the back section, so will have to cleanse my mind with some headphone Coltrane.

The more"what are you listening to" posts I see from you Charlie, I see that we share very similar tastes. I'm a big fan of John Grant's solo albums (Pale Green Ghosts was my album of 2013) and I've been back through his back catalogue to discover The Czars. I cannot thank you enough for pointing me in the direction of My Morning Jacket, what an amazing band! I can't believe they are not massive.

To keep the thread on track, I'm currently listening to -

Genesis - Foxtrot

Hi Marvin,

Sorry, I seem to have missed your post - only just spotted it.

Yes, it looks like a lot of our tastes overlap. You're obviously a very fine human being!!

I'm glad MMJ appeal to you. They are destined to be a great band on the edge of great acclaim. When I first came across them about ten years ago they apparently had quite a following in the Netherlands & Belgium. A twist on big in Japan, at least. They've grown in popularity in their home country. I suppose with Ryan Adams and Wilco, to name but two, they're in the upper echelons of that oddly-named genre beloved of Uncut mag, Alt-American.

As usual, I waffle and digress.

Still playing:

Smile Sessions.
