Vast intake of breath...

( * =still got) 'IMHO' Ratings out of 10

Mission:

760i (twice)- 9. Replaced the Celestion County which my uncle gave me. My first proper, new speakers. Had a Rotel 930AX and Philips CD604. Epic!

761i*- 9, odd but brilliant

780*- 10, old style, not the aerogel ones. Pure class.

780SE- 8, not quite as good as the originals, IMO...

781- 7, too bright

771E- 8, awesome, but lacked bass

773E- 9, brilliant speakers.

751 Freedom- 5, big sound, but no treble. The original versions are the ones I should have gone for...

753*- 10, my all-time favourite speaker.

731*- 8, great, but ugly. A bit like me, really.

732- 9 superb speakers for dance and rock etc. Regret selling these...

Celestion Ditton 66 (biggest hifi cockup story of my life!) (Off the scale...)

Wharfedale Coleridge* - 9 Huge standmounts, graceful and detailed. Awful to wire up.

Wharfedale Delta 30.2- 7 Inherited from the local pub. Surprisingly good!

MA B2- 8 good but a bit uninvolving

MA BR5 - 9 shouldn't have sold these...

Dali Zensor 3 (current)* - 10 probably the best standmounts I have owned. Their sound reminds me of Mission 732s, but with less in-yer-face-ness.

Mordaunt-Short MS3.10 (twice)*- 7 I still dig these out occasionally. Light in the bass but a lovely speaker.

Acoustic Energy Aegis 3 - Awful. The score is included in the model name. Probably my most disappointing speakers.

Celestion County (my first ever speakers, 9/10 at the time!)

TDL RTL2 - 9, great fun. Not amazing detail, but oh that bass...!

RTL3SE* - 1 , Ignore what I wrote about the AE Aegis above- THESE are the most disappointing speakers I've owned. I've still got them cos I can't shift them.

modded RTL G20* - 9 Changed the tweeters for some decent Vifa models. Amazing. Like RTL2 on steroids with huge, tight gut thumping bass and incedible top end. Just need to mend a loose terminal...

Studio 0.5* - 10 These things are wonderful. However, they shake my house at any volume, so in the loft they stay.

Mordaunt-Short Aviano 2 - 6 Some of the best treble performance I've ever heard, just a shame about the bass.

Yamaha NS300* - 7 cheapo mini-system jobs, which really shocked me when I put them on the end of a Roksan Kandy power amp...

I believe that's all of them... I'll edit in any more I remember!

EDIT I had a pair of B&W 601s3 for about a fortnight, too... Didn't like them!

Rob my friend, how very good to hear from you.

How are things working out for you:

- Have you managed to sort out your room acoustics?
- Have you got your eye on any good CDPs / Streamers?
- How are you finding your S/C?

Don't be a stranger, and tell Alex to drop in from time to time as well, as this place is not the same without you both.

Not had many to be honest as I kept the Celestion's for years... well actually I never got rid of them, my brother uses a pair of them and my dad has the others in storage. He has Ditton 33's in his living room.

KEF Reference Series 102

Celestion Ditton 44 (2 Pairs) on home/dad made stands

Denon branded Missions, not sure of the model

B&W 684

Foxl V2 Bluetooth Speaker for when I'm at work

Hello Cno

room acoustncs are better Sind I moved everything around or maybe I just got used to it ;-)

wel no new electronics for the moment need to save some money first as I bought a second motorcycle

But I can tell you this it will be a streamer as sinds I took the time put my network right I didn't use my cdp

thats almost a year I guess now.

i still buy cd's but put theme directly on the nas.

Last month I finally decided wich sc I wanted to keep an the winner is Transparent super music wave

an as I more enjoy vinyl when I have the time I bought the matching ic for my phono stage. ( witch IMO was pretty expensive compared to the sc if you consider it's only 1 m.)

maybe ishould explain in my tread to fireitup again :)

Have you isolated the speakers from the floor?

I'm not surprised you enjoy vinyl so much, given your system......it must have really settled in by now.

My advice would be to keep an eye out for a second hand Sneaky DS, which sounds like a pretty hi-end CDP, would revolutionise your digital replay, and not cost too much.

I'm always interested in what you're up to, so by all means, fire it up.

It all started with a pair of Mission 760 SE some 20 years ago.

And now I'm on the look-out for a new pair again! ;)

@ Jax

That's a very eclectic mix, with speakers of very varying characters.

If it's not too much of a torture, could you put them in order of preference (favourite first)........or failing that, your top 10.

Hello ErwinC, sorry for the delay in replying. I'd say the best of the lot was the ProAc. Amazing bass from such a small cabinet and an overall very musical speaker.

Very hard to rank all these speakers. For one thing, there's not a bad speaker on this list. They all have many strong points. What I can do is list the ones that I enjoyed the most in no particular order:

Kef Ref 103.3 (had them for 10 years) Will always have a soft spot for KEF

Dynaudio Contour S1.4 (also had these for quite a long stint) Not saying they are technically the best of all the Dyns I owned, but I definately enjoyed them the most.

PMC DB1i - Just something magical about these speakers IMO.

KEF LS50 - Best imaging of any speaker I've owned. Accurate as he!! without harshness. Superb small monitors.

PMC OB1i - I should never have sold them. I loved every minute with these.

PMC IB2s - All I can say is wow this is a heck of a good speaker. The most expensive speaker of the lot but my first experience with truly full range speakers. I love them and I hope I can resist my tendencies to box swap and keep them for a long long time.

Thanks for the late reply. ;)

Do you think these Proacs can be placed close to the back wall (10 inch)?

Hi Jax,

Out of interest, any reason why the SHL5 doesn't make it on this list? other than looks that is.

Also, the OB1i, would it be a non starter having them in a small listening room?

Yes they can but they are much better further away in free space. Also, you need to place them on very heavy, rigid stands to get their full benefit. Hope this helps.

Great thread, Cno.
Amazed how un-fickle I seem compared to some, though I had the inestimable benefit of hearing many speakers at the shop where I had my Saturday job until about 1985. So I never needed to own AR-LSTs, Sonabs, Quad ELS, KEF 105, ESS Heil, and many more.

Acoustic Research AR-4xa c. 1974
AR-7 c. 1976 (to create a quadraphonic system)
Nightingale NM1 c. 1977
Celestion SL600 c. 1986
Mission 760i c. 1993 for a second system
Sonus faber Concerto 1998 to date

I thought your wrap-around speaker might have been the JR149 but they were foam not cloth. I do remember that KEF series though, but not for their sound.
