I've been on a listening marathon today, pulling out all the classics that I hadn't heard in a while. A lot of the tracks I'd only heard on my crappy old Aiwa, years ago, so hearing them on a decent set-up was like hearing them for the first time.

Anyway, one of the tracks I played today was

Pearl Jam - 'Nothingman'

Great Vocal from Eddie Vedder and I think the best his voice has ever been recorded.

So, over to you lot. Not after necessarily the best song, but the best vocal.

I'll follow this up with a seperate 'Female Vocal' thread.

Irish Tenor Count John McCormack singing 'Una Furtiva Lagrima' by Donizetti. Also, Carlo Bergonzi singing 'Celeste Aida' from Verdi's opera of the same name.

On the popular side, Louis Armstrong in 'Mack The Knife', Woolly Woolstenholme's vocals in 'She Said' (Barclay James Harvest), and Dave Cousins singing 'Blue Angel' (Strawbs).

Good choices again mr G. Terence is great. If you have 'Symphony or damn', you'll know the tracks 'seasons' and 'Let her down easy', which are superb.

'Urban hang suite' got me into soul/r &b. Have you got 'Now'? His cover of 'This womans work' is amazing.

Cheers. Yes, I've got the heavier album by TTD. His debut was so good though that he will never match it. My other half got me into Maxwell, another brilliant debut.

My recent favorite male vocal is Seal's cover of It's a Man's Man's Man's World. Brilliantly done.

Volcane:"No Excuses" by Alice In Chains

Nice choice. Layne was great. My personal favourite vocal from him would be 'Sludge factory', but the 'MTV Unplugged' version, not the album version.

I considered 'Hallelujah' and 'Here comes the flood' for my top spot. Both tracks give me goose bumps. I love how raspy Gabriel's voice is on that track.

That would be another good thread - songs that give you goosebumps !

I know Hallelujah has been done to death but when you sit down and listen to Buckleys version it really is staggeringly good. You should dig up the Fripp version of Here Comes the Flood (on Fripp's Exposure album - another classic on this is North Star with vocals by Daryll Hall).

It's nice to look through the list of respondents to your post Bretty. "Hmm", "good call", and "never heard him", being my stock response to other postings. It is so personal a thing. Haven't noticed Cliff or Robbie turning up yet, but they must be much loved by many people!

Being cursed with good taste, I am content with my choices. Paul Robeson "Ol Man River" being another "perfect" vocal.

(Naturally, am tongue in cheek re good taste comment!)
