My personal faves are:

Hallelujah & Grace - Jeff Buckley

Didn't I - Darondo

Here Comes The Flood - Peter Gabriel (although the Fripp/Gabriel version is my favoutite version of the song)

Atmosphere - Joy Division

Marvin Gaye albums What's Going On, Let's Get It On, I Want You & Hear, My Dear

We People Who Are Darker Than Blue - Curtis Mayfield

In fact will now need to dig them out for a listen

I considered 'Hallelujah' and 'Here comes the flood' for my top spot. Both tracks give me goose bumps. I love how raspy Gabriel's voice is on that track.

That would be another good thread - songs that give you goosebumps !

I know Hallelujah has been done to death but when you sit down and listen to Buckleys version it really is staggeringly good. You should dig up the Fripp version of Here Comes the Flood (on Fripp's Exposure album - another classic on this is North Star with vocals by Daryll Hall).

Jeff's version is more brilliant once you've heard the Leonard cohen original, which I think is poo (apart from the superb lyrics). Jeff's arrangement is like a whole different song, not just a re-interpretation of the original.

I haven't heard the Fripp version of the Gabriel track, I'll go get the album. Let you know how I get on with it...

Clare Newsome: Scott Walker- If you go away
Forgot this song by Scott Walker, stunning vocal.
Another I forgot that has been mentioned is `Here Comes The Flood` by Peter Gabriel. Like Bretty I shall be seeking out the version recorded with Fripp.

One other I`ve just remembered is -

Michael Matijevic(Steelheart) - `She`s Gone`. Very powerful performance of a heavy rock ballad.

Frank Sinatra - One for my baby.

Runner up: Scott Walker- If you go away

Bronze medal: Elvis Costello: I want you

'I want you' is brilliant. I'd forgotten about Mr Costello. Have you heard the collaborative album he did with Burt Bacharach - 'Painted from memory'? Very, very good stuff, especially 'God give me strength', which I think would have to be my fave Costello vocal performance.

Anyone for Spike Milligan - Will I Find My Love Today? And yes, I am serious.

Most things with Mike Patton.

All i want is you & Stuck in a moment - U2/Bono

Tongue and In The Sun - REM/Michael Stipe.

I Want Someone Badly - and a handful more - Jeff Buckley.

I second the layne stayley suggestions, and meat loaf, quite a few songs could be chosen for both tho. Should mention here that Jerry Cantrell is no slouch either.

Id be surprised if it was all one take but ill take a chance with Axl Rose and Coma. I know one take wasnt a proviso but still...

That bloke from Slipknot and wait and bleed. the rightful heir to mike patton.

Most things with Shannon Hoon.

A cliche probably, but She, by Costello.

She Cant Change Me and When Im Down by Chris Cornell.

Ooh, aye, someone below said feeling good. I second that, but by Muse/Mat Bellamy.

Kurt Cobain, Nirvana Unplugged. Pretty much all of it.

Oh, and angels by robbie and miss you nights by cliff teeheehee...

Not quite following the brief, am i?

Craig M.:eddie vedder - black

Very nice choice. Do you have the new re-issue of 'Ten'? There's a re-mastered version of the album included, and 'Black' especially, sounds the nuts.

Oh good call - havent heard that for years, no wheres that CD... Around the same era/flavour, I also love Curt Cobain's "Where did you sleep last night" off the MTV Unplugged album.

JohnDuncan:Tricky. Blue Nile's Tinseltown in the Rain, Elbow's Newborn, or Whitesnake's original Here I Go Again.

Paul Buchanan sings on my favourite duet 'Downside-up' off Peter Gabriel's Ovo album along side Elizabeth Fraser. I actually thought it was Peter Gabriel singing and for him I would go with Suppers Ready........

I think Jeff Buckley, most notably Hallelujah, Thom Yorke, my favourite vocal probably being Street Spirit, Ed Harcourt (criminally underrated) for Late Night Partner (anyone with a keen musical interest needs to take a listen to those lyrics, if you don't understand them, you don't have the passion!) and Damien Rice on Eskimo, the way his voice blends into the strings and then into the operatic female vocal is so special I just shiver any time I hear it.

Oh, definitely worth getting. There's the dvd of their MTV 'Unplugged' performance included, too, which sounds great. It meant I could finally retire my beaten up VHS version that I recorded off MTV in 1992!
