Hi guys. I understand there is a rule of thirds when buying hifi, but what is the split with home cinema?

I have the Quad Lites (bought for half price) but want to know if I should be pairing them with amp capable of driving a £1000 set of speakers or a £500 set of speakers? As the speakers are now a couple of years old, should I be pairing them with a less expensive amp? (don't want the amp out doiing the speakers or vice versa). Do I spend £300, £500 or £1000 on an amp? I know ultimately my budget comes into it, but don't want to compromise if I can help it! I don't know!!!

I expect the Yamaha 863 will be a good match in terms of performance and price.

Personally, I would buy the best I could afford. You may not have speakers to do a more expensive amp justice but it will still sound brilliant and the upgrade bug may not rear it's head so soon!! Additionally, if you do decide to upgrade and upgrade the speakers you will have a piece of mind that you have a receiver capable of driving better speakers!! Remember, that's my view on it.

Thanks Messiah, good advice. Moved this into the correct forum and sorted out my bad spelling as well! Yamaha 863 or Onkyo 876 - decisions, decisions...
