Norways The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band, funky, eclectic prog and better than their self titled album...

Big Big Train and 'English Boy Wonders', more jazz fusion prog.....

All About Eve - `December`(Narnia mix) (10" vinyl) After an extremely hectic two days a listen to this on the headphones was just the tonic. You don`t expect a song about Christmas to contain a sublime guitar solo but this one certainly does. The best version is the `Narnia mix` which is only available on 10" and 12" vinyl plus the cassette single format. If you can`t get hold of one of those then make sure you at least get the album version and not the radio edit. A very special song I only play at this special time of year. If I`d written this track I`d feel extremely proud but also very disappointed that it isn`t very well known. One day perhaps.

Big Big Train are now my new favourite band. The album 'The Difference Machine' is outstanding. The strength of the sonwriting, the musicianship, the goosebumps moments, particularly 'Salt water falling on uneven ground' have been frequent. Best of all, whilst the style is prog, BiG Big Train are like Anekdoten in that there is no clear influence back to the major prog bands of the 1970s. Highly recommended.

The soldiers - coming home very appropriate given the award ceremony hosted by the Sun newspaper on ITV for the heroes out in afghanistan. Actually they can sing and the final track is that haunting bugle melody used to signify a death.

All proceeds goes to help for heroes and the Royal British Legion.

Barry Manilow - `Because It`s Christmas` (vinyl) This is usually the last album I play on Christmas Eve whilst I`m waiting for the kids to fall asleep. Nice and relaxing listen with a glass of wine.

listening on spotify ... wierd! .. wife has already told me to 'turn it down' ... but on my list of cd's to buy!

Penguine Cafe Orchestra are superb, try 'When in Rome', the live album, for an excellent best of and to hear how well they play.

Presently listening to Norway's prog band Shining (as opposed to Swedens metal band Shining, Spotify has mixed them up). The music is at the more frentic, semi industrial end of King Crimson. Not an easy listen, but worth while if you like that sort of thing..

There is a very strong metal/local folk music fusion scene in Finland, which makes for rollocking good time music....

Finntroll - Nattfod Korpiiklanni - Karkelo

Finland's Kingston Wall. 'I' is a rocker, Kula Shaker meets Reef and a Jimi Hendrix cover. 'II' has a more eastern influence to the sound. 'III' is the most psychedellic with various electronica noises. But all three are played as a tight rock band.
