a decent stand makes

Since buying, I've slightly resented by Rega RP1

I love my vinyl but much to my frustration the little hrt music streamer had much more oompf with the yamaha s-500 amp and wharfedale speakers

I've refused to accept the aberration and blamed the phono stage on the amp for not knowing better (after all, I keep reading how great the RP1 is and I don't want to believe digital is just THAT much better)

On Wednesday, I finally got rid of the Ikea coffee table (I know, I know) that the RP1 had been resting on and now have a decent hi-fi stand with the RP1 separated from everything else

Oompf I now have in bucketloads. The music projects much more. My battered copy of Love's 'Forever Changes' finally sounds like the 'Forever Changes' that I know and love. That new Godspeed... record rocks the hell out of this tiny apartment.

Previously, I was having to crank up the volume now I'm having to dive for the remote to stop the neighbours complaining.

Who'd have thunked it? I'll be changing the cables next

That's great news. However the reasons why transducers like speakers and turntables work better when they are properly supported and isolated can be explained by science. I'm not sure the same can be said for the audible differences between two pairs of cables which measure alike in every way.

Good isolation supports always benefit TT's far more than any other hifi componant for obvious reasons, but never more so than with unsuspended designs like the Rega that can suffer badly from any vibrations in the room, including those from speakers.

I'm still happy that after all these years my old mid-level Thorens (without fancy phono cables!) sounds better than a decent CD source (with decent cables), and it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that vinyl is having something of s resurgance right now...
