Weird music here

Though I'd start this thread. It's non genre specific. I'd like it to be a place to share these weird and wonderful artists and albums. I always struggled to explain my musical taste to others as even though it's broad it sways to things that are not ordinary...

1) Rhythm (basis for music) I know some won't agree but in my opinion melody is not necessary :) I always liked awkard time signatures.

2) Arrangements

3) Drawing from different musical styles

4) Different tunings and flavours

Surely I can't be the only one who enjoys weird music? What can you recommend?

Alva Noto is one that I frequently listen to. On first listening, many of his albums will be "what the hell is this?", but on repeated listening, sort of draws you into their sparse bleeps and clicks. Although one or two of his albums sound more or less like a fax machine, the series of albums he did with Ryuichi Sakamoto are wonderfully soothing to listen to (and more accessible!). There's a few on TIDAL and Spotify if anyone wants to listen to them.

Don't know this one, David. Thanks will have a look. I appreciate there may be lots not to people tastes but that's kind of the point.

You can be eccentric as much as you like on this thread :)

Ive listened to some of it but I didn’t find it weird. What I listened to, isn’t to my taste though.

I don't want to discuss taste on this thread. I'd like people to post freely without others criticising.

Sure weird is relative. Recently recommended album Mari Boine "Gula Gula" would be weird for many people. For me it was great but I recognise it's a little weird.

Talk Talk some would consider weird, I don't and I like some of their albums, probably Spirit of Eden is a good place to start.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson is very weird

Fripp and Eno. No Pussyfooting. From 1973. Still gets an occasional play, when the wife is out, she can’t stand it.

Recently re-released on vinyl, so easily available.

Listen to Jim Morrison’s poems on the American prayer doors album, which has great tracks btw, is quite weird in a good way. Some naughty bits too. But a bloody good album to boot.

Definitely not weird to me, but has been described as such by others I tried to introduce it to, is:

Bang on a Can’s performance of Brian Eno’s ‘Music for Airports’.

I think it’s hauntingly beautiful, soaring and uplifting.

Any Diamanda Galás album is weird. This one is my favourite:

Diamanda Galás & John Paul Jones - The Sporting Life.
