Warm airy musical speakers?

I was just stating a fact ! never wanted to say that dynaudio speakers were better that any one, only that a smooth midrange is a characteristic from dynaudio speakers.

That's an opinion, not a fact.

Yes they DO!!! My experience with SF is very limited, just heard two models long time ago but don't remember the models, bouth bookshelves.

The problem I have with this thread is that "warm" and "airy" are meaningless terms.

Well i did demo Venere 1.5 and 2.5,which has a lot of bass and didn´t impressed me much maybe due to wrong/small room and electronics.Venere 1.5 was silky and airy,say warm but far away from precision of a PMC 21/22 I did demo too on that day.I would prefer more a precise speaker and ad the warmth with the electronics.

It's been a while since I skanked properly, Dave. And I've never been to Jamaica. I have been to Barbados a couple of times, a great music island: Soca can be splendid.

Warm and airy? Look for a speaker with a soft dome tweeter. Vienna Acoustics, Dynaudio, Sonus Faber, Opera, Eggleston Works. The problem is your budget. Let's bump it to $2500 thinking you might get a discount. Tube amps usually cost more than solid state and smooth airy speakers cost money.

The best I can think of is getting those Sonus Faber Venere 1.5 bookshelf speakers at $1200 Retail. The 2.0 is above the price range that you want to spend. Another choice would be the Vienna Acoustics Haydn but that is pushing your budget. You can often find them used or even new on Ebay for under $1000. The reason I like the Sonus Faber option better for you is that they are more sensitive and easier to drive than the Vienna Acoustics. Good for tube amps. Stay away from the Focal speakers. They are too clear sounding and you won't like the metal dome tweeter.

Now for tube amps. This is more tricky. Not many in your price range. Prima Luna is not at all that warm sounding and actually can be bright to my ears. The Rogue Cronos is a great choice but it's $1800. The closest I can come up with to stay within budget is the Jolida 302BRC. It's nice and warm, has enough power, and you usually can get a discount off the $1475 retail price.

So with a discount that would be about $2400 USD for both the Venere 1.5s and Jolida tube amp.

Another alternative is to explore high sensitive single driver speakers and low powered tube amps. The Zu Omen sounds wonderful. The main driver works all the way up to 12k before the smaller tweeter takes over. They are very sensitive as well at about 100db. They never sound bright. The Zu Omen is $1500. You could then combine that with a Jolida JD102CRC. It is a 25 watter using EL84 tubes. More than enough power for those Zu's. $875 Retail.

That last recommendation would probably be my choice.

I would go with peachtree decco 65 and D5 speakers or if you want more scale and bass with the mentioned Focal Aria 906.They are 1600,- Ad a little more for the Focal speakers.I use myself decco2+Focal906 and they match very well providing the sound you are looking for without being lush.I am sure you will like it if you try.

A bit late to the party but imo polypropylene/plastic coned speaker usually have an inert 'warmth' that many paper (and other materials) coned ones dont. The trade off can be a somewhat less clear/transparent stage. Efficiency and/or transient response can also suffer in a size (but not weight) comparable driver, simple paper usually being lighter than a polyprop.

Its difficult to generalise as there are other factors playing a role, not least the tweeter and xover quality.

My knowledge of expensive speakers is limited but I would expect Harbeth to tick your requirements.

When I visit Stockholm next time I sure will try to listen sonus faber speakers. In fact I always thought their speakers is something special, just based by the look of speakers, design and craftmanship.

Its not necessary at all to buy new, but the problem is that it can be hard to listen to, if lines is old and has been discontinued. Well well, I think the best start is to start listening in different systems, when I got the chance, to find out what Im looking for.

Actually Im on trip this for a few days, so tomorrow I will visit a local hifi-store and just listening. I know they offering Boston aucoustics, revel, kef, Linn, monitor audio.

Warm & Airy? IMO these attributes come from room acoustics at least as much as loudspeaker/amplification. Central heating on with windows open is a start.

More serioisly,language always struggles to describe sound, colour or smell which is maybe why following these great suggestions only audition will really confirm the choice. Great advice which I (sadly) have never (yet) taken. Good luck.
