Andrew Everard:
chebby:You weren't averse to 'singing' at yours.

Not at all sure what that means...

Singing can mean 'telling on others', or it can mean actual singing.

Didn't you go to a very prestigious choir school?

Apologies Andrew.

I remembered from somewhere that you sang in the Westminster Abbey choir as a boy and mistakenly assumed you were at their school too.

Westminster Abbey Special Choir - formed from church choirs in the London area to perform alongside the 'real' choir three times a year.

I think its easier to get better sound from a CD set-up, for the same cash outlay.

Haven't experienced a good enough HD / NAS system yet to comment on absolute quality. Maybe when I win the lottery I will take a trip to Linn towers...

JoelSim:I'm not sure that the language used in the question is particularly robust JD...

Start your own then. Oh, you can't...

HD all the way for me.

Am I the same as Joel, in that both my HD tracks and my CDs use the same external DAC? The difference being I'm with the Mac/DAC.

Oh, and JD, do you have any special insightful powers as to when the "Remoteless" app will be Mac compatible?

JohnDuncan:No, but am happy to take Roberta From Spotify to lunch to discuss*. Or dinner. Or drinks.

*I know it's a different company, but let's do lunch anyway

Haha, I hope this poll thing is an on-demand service now that you're "Head of Technology Delivery"?. I assume you don't pay the subscription just so you can fantasize about Roberta from Spotify?

well. i was pretty much starting from scratch having sold my old budgt marantz seperates. and my wharfedale diamond speakers. which i never liked.

came on here looking for suggestions for a neater box solution that would also sound great. ended up with HD on the PC to a Squeezebox Duet to the Avi 9.1 speakers using their onboard DAC.

tested it up against a borrowed arcam alpha 7se and i 'think' the HD sounded better, same cables same DAC. But I dont have 100% hearing anyway. However. I do know I can sit on the sofa browsing the colour screen of my Duet controller and access and album or track in a second or two. The wife loves it, and friends all think its neat. none of them give a toss about seperates or CD players but they all ask about the squeezebox and wireless. and one couple now have a squeezebox boom in the living room instead of their rubbish little mini system.

Not quite. I use the DAC in my CDP for CD and streaming through Mac/AE. I haven't scrimped on the cables from the AE to CDP either.

method man:I dont have 100% hearing anyway.

No-one does. I'm pleased you've managed to sort your system with the Squeezebox. 9.1/Squeezebox is a nice combo, enjoy!

thanks octopo.

my hearing on last test a long time ago is 90% left ear and 70% right. however due to glue ear. a cold can knock both of them down for a few weeks. what is permanent is that i struggle in large noisy environments to understand peoples speech. and im hopeless at guessing the direction of a noise.

thats why i have to put my hands up and bow out of any fine line comparson issues.

I reckon there is room for improvement in the paraphrasing. I envisage more:

1) Yes if you are not wary about new things and are financially happy to do so.

2) Maybe if you are thinking about it, or can't afford it/haven't got the time to spare.

3) No but I'm happy to just be.

matengawhat:
you need a 3rd box for can't tell the difference and not bothered how its stored as long as it sounds good

Ditto that. Though I suspect the local Head of Technology Delivery knew what he was doing all along...

I must agree with MethodMan, to my ears HD is as good as CD. And my OH just loves playing any track she feels without trawling through racks of cd's. And a Sonos is just the best when you've a few mates round. "Remember that Primal Scream track" What? This one? Brilliant!

True Blue:
Fair point

reworded

Do you think mains cables can make a difference?

1. Yes I am open to new ideas and theories

or

2. No I am stuck in a cave, the world is flat and we will asphyxiate if travelling above 15mph

Modify to:

1. I may have more money than sense, hang on old £20 notes sound/taste/behave better than new ones.

or

2. I have tried them and know the answer, lucky me I have more £20 notes and they are all worth £20.

JohnDuncan:Tip: don't google "floating luddite".

I know, JD - depressing, isn't it? Never mind, bit more SEO work and we can get this thread higher than sixth, I'm sure...
