1.Do you believe they make a difference

or

2. Are you deaf?

Fair point

Do you think mains cables can make a difference?

1. Yes I am open to new ideas and theories

or

2. No I am stuck in a cave, the world is flat and we will asphyxiate if travelling above 15mph

Definitely CD because I still have to make my own compilation cassettes for the car.

Although I am working on an mp3 to cassette rig.

I love the idea of NAS based storage augmented with a DAC but a recent tot up of the outlay didn't justify the move.

Airport Express£88Apple iTouch (used)£40NAS£300?DAC (Dacmagic)£230TOTAL£658

Now bearing in mind that this DAC won't sound as good as my current CDP, it's not an easily justifiable spend. Especially when I can monoblock my Quad for less. Starting from scratch it would be a different story.

Airport Express £75
iPod Touch - free (gift)
NAS - doesn't work with AE
DAC (Fubar IV) - £125

Total £200

(actual cost of iPod Touch and £1100 Mac ignored for argument distortion purposes)

Yes. I just had my tinfoil hat DCT treated. It provides even beter protection against government mind control now. The downside is that the voices in my head are now a lot louder and have a wider soundstage.

or

No.

DAC - £184

USB cable - £8 (in a John Lewis sale)

Optical cable - £8 (supplied by Beresford)

HDD - N/A (Already present in computer and in DVD/HDD recorder.)

Total £200

(Not counting cost of computers or DVD/HDD recorder because we had them already.)

I prefer CD in my particluar set-up, but acknowledge that in any system enough can be spent to make either CD or streamed music sound superior. If I got a Benchmark DAC then it would undoubtedly sound better. Then if I bought a CDX2 that might top the Benchmark. A Chord QBD-76 might trump the lot (until I plug in a Chord CD player that has the QBD76 DAC built in).

So I think the quality argument is neither here-nor-there and (as usual) comes down to price paid and system integration/synergy rather than any inherent superiority of a particular medium..

I see this as just a vote on convenience really. I expect that as many find CD convenient as those who don't.

It all gets a bit fuzzier now some really good CD players have connections to use external sources through their internal DACs.

I'v got:

Ripnas & 4TB Box £1,400

DacMagic £220

Sonos £700

...And my CD73 has given up the ghost.

Guess how I voted.

I'm not sure that the language used in the question is particularly robust JD...

Can it be like the X-Factor where we get to vote for our favourite as many times as we like, and therefore paying for Simon Cowell's next jet ski session?

PS I voted for being a luddite and I have both running through exactly the same DAC/amp/cables/speakers. Therefore I win.

John (Hanging Chad) Duncan has told you the only vote that's acceptable.
