I think its easier to get better sound from a CD set-up, for the same cash outlay.
Haven't experienced a good enough HD / NAS system yet to comment on absolute quality. Maybe when I win the lottery I will take a trip to Linn towers...
JohnDuncan:No, but am happy to take Roberta From Spotify to lunch to discuss*. Or dinner. Or drinks.
*I know it's a different company, but let's do lunch anyway
Haha, I hope this poll thing is an on-demand service now that you're "Head of Technology Delivery"?. I assume you don't pay the subscription just so you can fantasize about Roberta from Spotify?
well. i was pretty much starting from scratch having sold my old budgt marantz seperates. and my wharfedale diamond speakers. which i never liked.
came on here looking for suggestions for a neater box solution that would also sound great. ended up with HD on the PC to a Squeezebox Duet to the Avi 9.1 speakers using their onboard DAC.
tested it up against a borrowed arcam alpha 7se and i 'think' the HD sounded better, same cables same DAC. But I dont have 100% hearing anyway. However. I do know I can sit on the sofa browsing the colour screen of my Duet controller and access and album or track in a second or two. The wife loves it, and friends all think its neat. none of them give a toss about seperates or CD players but they all ask about the squeezebox and wireless. and one couple now have a squeezebox boom in the living room instead of their rubbish little mini system.
Charlie Jefferson:HD all the way for me.Am I the same as Joel, in that both my HD tracks and my CDs use the same external DAC? The difference being I'm with the Mac/DAC.Oh, and JD, do you have any special insightful powers as to when the "Remoteless" app will be Mac compatible?
Not quite. I use the DAC in my CDP for CD and streaming through Mac/AE. I haven't scrimped on the cables from the AE to CDP either.
my hearing on last test a long time ago is 90% left ear and 70% right. however due to glue ear. a cold can knock both of them down for a few weeks. what is permanent is that i struggle in large noisy environments to understand peoples speech. and im hopeless at guessing the direction of a noise.
thats why i have to put my hands up and bow out of any fine line comparson issues.
I must agree with MethodMan, to my ears HD is as good as CD. And my OH just loves playing any track she feels without trawling through racks of cd's. And a Sonos is just the best when you've a few mates round. "Remember that Primal Scream track" What? This one? Brilliant!
