Viewing Distance

Just a quick question,

When the viewing distance guides give a distance to sit from a TV is it from the front of the sofa or the viewers head as this can make a big difference to the correct size screen for my room?

It should be measured from the viewer's head, not the front of the sofa.

based on these viewing distance I'd only be able to have a small tv, how important are these viewing distance figures and how much leyway is there in them?
